I was flipping through the channels last night and spotted Lloyd Maines playing a Mullen in a studio setting. It was a brief shot but it sounded great. Does anyone know what he's up to these days? I consider him a great player. I'd sure like to see him play live someday.

Jimbo I caught show on TV the other day I believe it was a bio on the Dixie Chicks, and they interviewed Lloyd who is the father of Natalie Maines lead singer of the Chicks. He was producing some of their work/albums and playing steel (saw that nice looking blue Mullins)/dobro on most of their albums. He's still living in Lubbock Texas and doing the deal....He is one of the all time greats that keeps a fairly low profile. |

Mark is slightly behind times on LM's location.
Lloyd's been living in Austin for at least 5 years, maybe more. We've been good pals for about 33 years now. He occasionally will use me on sessions when he feels the music calls for my style, or he's too busy, or some other nonsense I can't figure out. I also have done setups on his black SD-10 Mullen, which used to belong to both me and later, Randy Carson.
Basically, his success with the Chix and other projects means he can do whatever he wants nowadays. He's choosy about his producing jobs, and does a lot of performing as a duo with singer/songwriter Terri Hendrix, singing and playing acoustic guitar and dobro... both of which he's quite proficient at playing, of course.
I asked him recently if he now considers himself a steel player who produces, or a producer who plays steel. His reply was "hmmm... I never thought about it. It's just work." _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Lloyd has actually been based in Austin for quite a while now (unless he's moved back to Lubbock very recently). He is one of the most sought after producers there and still plays great.
To my mind (aside from being a great country player) Lloyd has been one of the real innovators in using pedal steel in a rock and roll context. He was playing amazing overdriven solos back in the 70's in a unique style, with elements of classic r&r slide but bringing a lot of his own to it, and really utilizing the pedals on E9th. The Joe Ely "Live Shots" album from 1980 with Lloyd is a classic of rock and roll steel IMHO. When I lived in Austin back then I never missed a chance to hear Lloyd play with Ely.
It was great to see this thread this morning; last night I was really enjoying Lloyd's playing on the first Wilco album "A.M.". Really nice country steel and dobro, and I think what sounded like a distorted "rock" lead guitar solo may have been Lloyd on steel too. I'll have to go back and listen again.
And he is one heck of a nice guy! |

Hey again Herb,
I guess you posted while I was writing... a little overlap in my post but what the hell!
I first met Lloyd around the same time I met you (early '79; my first month or two in Austin) and possibly at the same place (Gruehne Hall). Doesn't seem quite that long ago somehow... And thanks again for the gig! |

Duh! I should have known Herb would have the scoop! I'm glad to say the least that Lloyd is staying busy. I imagine a world where you get to play and produce music that you like all day every day. Is that a Job? Or is it Heaven?
I'm sure you are busy too Herb. I'll never be able to thank you enough for the invite to see you play with James Hand at the Broken Spoke when I came through Texas in 03'. Hanging out with you and Ricky while we watched Murph and Redd at the Continental was a major highlight for me that year. Anyway, Thanks AGAIN. And thanks for the update on Lloyd.

I did a show in Atlanta several years ago (with "Last Train Home", subbing for our esteemed forum colleague Dave Van Allen ). Lloyd was there playing his duo gig with Terri Hendrix; as Herb says, with Terri Lloyd usually plays acoustic and dobro, keeping it simple (and traveling light) I guess. Anyway he asked if he could play my steel on one song, of course I said yes. During their set he proceeded to play one of his absolutely ripping, long distorted "rock" solos on MY steel. After years of seeing him play a lot I hadn't heard him in a long time at that point; I was definitely humbled!

A few years ago, I noticed on Dale Watson's "I Hate These Songs" the steel credits listed both Lloyd Maines and our long-time forum friend Herb Steiner. I wrote Herb an e-mail asking which cuts he played on. Herb wrote me back saying, "Leave Me Alone". So I didn't speak to him for a long time, but then I realized that was a song title. _________________ HagFan

Lloyd has been doing quite a bit of touring with a folksy girl singer by the name of Terri Hendrix. I saw him nearby to here in November. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Does anybody out there remember an Austin City Limits show from around '85 with The Maines Bros. It was the first time I'd heard of them and I loved it. I used to have it on VHS. They put an ending on the Little Feat song "New Dehli Freight Train" that went on forever and had me rolling over. Great stuff. |

Lloyd's solo on "Because of the Wind" with Joe Ely (on the "Honky Tonk Masquerade" album I think) is one of the all-time great rides _________________ Head full of this kaleidoscope of brain-freight, Heart full of something simple and slow

I believe it was Lloyd who played steel in Jerry Jeff Walker's backup band on the "Texas Connection" T.V. show. It was shown on the now defunct "Nashville Network" and featured some great acts playing live. Jerry Jeff acted as the host as well. |

Ah yes, the Texas Connection!! I did one with Gary P. Nunn back in about '92. The show was taped at the KLRU studios, the PBS station at the University of TX. That's where "Austin City Limits" is taped, and also where the 90's series hosted by Willie Nelson, "Legends of Country," was recorded. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Hey JW, checkout Lloyd Maines' instructional video, 60 licks in 60 minutes(I think that's the name of it). Very interesting and different approach to some nice licks. I tried to find mine but I either gave it away or it's misplaced. If I find it, I'll send it to you. See ya! |
