You know, we’re all primarily interested in (translation: obsessed with) learning how to be better players, but I think it’s important to remember those early players who paved the way for us. People who pioneered the use of pedals like Alvino Rey, Rico Turcetti, and Speedy West who are no longer with us, and Herb Remington and Bud Issacs who are still with us. We are blessed with 2 of these treasures here on the forum. Al Marcus and Roy Ayers.

These men deserve as much honor as we can bestow on them. If they had not done what they did so many years ago, we would not be doing what we do today.

So the next time you’re looking up the tab for some lick or chord position, please take a moment to think about these guys and how they had to figure it all out from scratch, with none of the reference materials we have today.

Roy and Al, and Herb and Bud, if you're reading this, I salute you. May your names live forever in our hearts.

This NEEDS to be bumped to the top in deference to those who have paved the way and, in the process, made it easier for the rest of us.

When I hear music from the "pioneers" I'm always amazed at how great they played with such a relatively new instrument. Hats off to all of them.

What amazes me when I listen to some of the old things recorded in the 30's and 40's,[except maybe Les Paul]They sounded great with great chops,WITHOUT Protools,reverbs,delays,stompboxes,5000 dollar mikes, millon dollar studios, little amps with eight or ten inch speakers,They did it without all the goodies most of us take for granted today.DYKBC.

Mike,

Coming from a highly accomplished steel guitarist like yourself, the listing of my name along with several of my idols is a tremendous compliment. I have never really done anything outstanding in music; I just happened to be lucky enough to be in some of the right places at the right times. I have always believed that "good luck" was something that happens when opportunity meets with preparedness. One cannot control the opportunities, but preparedness is simple to achieve by the application of s simple three-word phrase: practice, practice, practice.

To do so much with so little, and leave the legacy they did, also what Charles D. said. My hat's off to all that contributed.

Mike,
That's why six of the seven you mentioned are in the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. Hats off to all of them and what they have done for the instrument we all love.

Mike-I am Honored to be listed in such great company. Thanks very much, I appreciate it.

I remember Ricco Turchetti when he was on the Arthur Godfrey show. He played a guitar that he somehow put pedals on it to get all his chords. That was around 1950 or so. I was playing my 1942 -8 string 6 pedal Gibson Electra-Harp((they only made about 12 of them, before WWII)). tuned up like Alvino Rey's....I still have memories of those exciting days gone by....al.SmileSmile

Roy and Al, even if it was just an accident of timing that you guys were there at the beginning, the fact is that you WERE there, and your pioneering efforts paved the way for the rest of us.

Once again, I salute you both.
