First Clip of the Week in 2008 - here is a real old timer for you. The player is announced, a great player that left us way too early, but played in the same league as Joaquin Murphy and Noel Boogs.

Enjoy!

I guess he has been gone nearly 60 years?? He didn't do much recording--as far as I know only one release under his own name, and a handful with Copas and Paul Howard. He apparently was quite a character.

The fiddler is Red Herron, any idea who the guitar player is?

The guitarist is most likely Hank Garland at 16 or 17 years of age. Hank spent a year or two with Copas beginning in 1947 after leaving Paul Howard's band.

The recording here, "Jamboree", dates from 1947 or 1948, no later.

Just going by ear, it sounds a lot like Hank's early staccato style--reminiscent of George Barnes. Copas yells out a nickname of some kind at the start of the solo, but I can't make it out.

Who else but Hank would have the nerve to quote "South", "Pretty Baby", Glow Worm", and "Mairsy Doats" in the same hillbilly recording??

Thanks, Mitch!

I also had a feeling that it might be Hank Garland, but was unsure about the timeframe.

Kind Regards, Walter
