At the start of at least 2 of the Hawaii Calls TV show clips currently on youtube, there is a beautiful song possibly named Heavenly Islands that I'd like some info on, should anyone here know.
Nina sings it, with Barney on steel.
Is this the correct title, where can the lyrics be found, where can the entire tune be found, or any other versions of it?
This is the only time/place I've ever heard this tune, which to me is one of the all time great Hawaiian songs, from just hearing the 1st 1/4!

The song is, indeed, called "Heavenly Islands" and served as the Hawai`i Calls theme music for many years. There is at least one commercial recording of it on the Capital LP entitled "More Hawai`i Calls: Greatest Hits."
I have at least 15 of the two dozen Hawai`i Calls TV Shows on videotapes of sketchy quality. But the music is what matters and these represent some of the finest examples of Barney's playing. |

In just now doing my own homework, those were the 2 answers that I found via google. But, nothing else. It's certainly been a hidden gem, and one I intend on learning/butchering. |

I did see your post on the HSGA forum and was hoping for some good replys, but since nothing much did, I figured to post it here with my own questions I'd been meaning to ask for quite a while and seeing your thread got me to do it, finally.
The utoob poster sez he's compiling some of these shows for a DVD release in the future, for which I'm awaiting. |

I don't think so. I mean... He might try to release something commercially, but I doubt he has the permission of Hula Records which owns the "Hawaii Calls" trademark and all material related to Hawaii Calls. I think if anyone were going to do this, it would be Flip McDiarmid.

I doubt he'll be doing it on a 'legit' basis, and the McDiarmid's will never do anything like it on their own. The quality of what this guy has shown ain't too shabby and while it may not be legal, I'm all for it. Without bootleg's, my music collection would be comparatively miniscule and this world be way worse to deal with. If Hula Recs. had a problem with it they probably would have done as many near-sighted $ hungry music corporations with their lawyers have, and stupidly had the vids removed, along with the free advertising. Maybe they just havn't noticed yet.
Don and Flip are sitting on a mountainous musical goldmine of which they dole out dribs and drabs, at best. I have stuff Don wants but won't share it with him because they don't cut loose with much, as is the way of the industry. I'm not a fan. |

And I have to plead "no comment" to the Hula Records comments as I am on their payroll.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman when they were young as shown in the clip. I'm fairly certain that is Arthur on Vibes and Augie Goupil (sr) doing most of the bird calls.
I did meet both Martin and Arthur in their late senior years, both of whom were members of the Waikiki ELKS Club. Arthur's Vibes are still at the club and are currently owned by Pat Sylva, a very fine jazz pianist and Vibe player who was, many years ago, a principal member of the very popular "SURFERS". While Pat plays exceptional jazz, his interpretation of Hawaiian music is nothing short of awesome !  |
