Hi All,
Steve here from Kitchener, Ontario. Im relatively new to the steel world and Im looking to upgrade my pedal steel. I know little about value, pricing, etc. and wonder if anybody could lend a hand to a fella trying to upgrade!!! To buy a new steel I have to sell my old one, a Sho-Bud S10, 3/4 Student model. I have no idea how to even begin setting a price for it!
Looking forward to chatting!

I sold one about a year ago, but I don't know if mine was considered a student model. It was 3/4, built in the 60's, wood body and neck. I got $900.00. Wish I had kept it.

I'm getting ready to upgrade but I,m keeping mine(starter). I don't want to be without if the upgrade needs something or has an issue where it needs to be sent out. If you have only the one and it has an issue, you'll be less likely to address it because you'll be without.

Lately it's been open season on those older wood sho~buds. If you can afford to keep it, that may be your best bet.

What makes you think it's a student model? I ask because some folks think if it's only got one lever it's a student model and that's not always the case.

If you post some pictures, you'll be able to get a lot better idea of what it's worth.

Hi Steve,Make sure you have a student model.Sounds more like a Pro I or Pro II if it's got 4 knees. If it is, you have a guitar that's sought after by a lot of players, probablly worth $1500.00 to $1800.00 depending on the condition and the originality of the instrument. If it is a student model I've seen them go for an average price here on the forum for $600.00 to $800.00
Maybe Chris LeDrew will have some comment's on this,he's up in Canada also, and he's owned several old Bud's.
You can also do a search on the forum and get a good idea of what you might ask for it,or you may indeed have a guitar you would want to keep.

UH... someone correct me if I'm wrong but a pro 1 can have one lever, according to Jeff Surrat and a Pro II is a double neck.

I could be wrong.

Taking it one step further, some don't even have the Pro decals on then at all. I'm told that they simply ran out of them on any given day.

Thanks for all your suggestions!
Im going to post a few pics and hopefully I can nail down a better identification.
The fellow that sold it to me called it a student model.
Id prefer to sell it because I have an opportunity to pick up a really nice S10 Fessenden.

You come to London ever? if so, come see me and bring it with you.

Steve there should be a model number as well as a serial number on the underside of the guitar. The model number would tell you if it is a Pro-1, Pro-2, Super-pro, maverick, or whatever. The Pro-2 is a model name and does not mean it has 2 necks.

From that same site,

The Gretsch price list from 1983 lists the Super Pro-II as a double 10 string, 8 pedals, 6 knee levers with a suggested price of $3530

Refer back to Chri Ivey's post.

Steve,

Email me some pics and I'd be happy to tell you what you have. It's probably an updated Maverick (Sho~Bud student model). Keep in mind, though, that some old-timers consider any single-neck 'Bud to be a student model. Single 10's were not taken as seriously in the 60's and 70's as they are now, according to many conversations I've had with older players. So you may have a 6139 or a Pro 1, or maybe even one of the Sho~Bud/Fender S-10's that were produced in 1976. They came standard with 3+4.

BTW, the Pro II is certainly and definitely a double-neck guitar.

I'm no expert on 'Buds, but I've never seen or heard of a single-neck Pro II. Muttering

Sorry Boys,I spoke out of turn. Embarassed
I once had an old Sho~Bud. It was difficult to play I sold it for good $ bought a new Mullen and love it. To me the old bud was more of a collectors item than a good steel to learn to play on Shocked

Hi Steve,

That's a single-neck Professional, or "round-front rack and barrel" as us Sho~Bud freaks know it. Smile The model number is 6139. It is not a student model. The left knees are aftermarket. Probably 1970-72. Do you have pics of the whole body and the whole undercarriage? Looks like some sort of pad is adhered to the rear of the body. It would be interesting to see more pics. My email is:

toocommercial@hotmail.com

Cool!

Sweet guitar. No problem puting more levers on it. Original parts readily available and if you insist on selling, it won't last more than an hour.

A keeper for sure.
