| First, I probably cannot play the lick that _______ put on _______'s recording of _______. Second, I may not even like his licks that are on it or anything else. Since I am not going to make anything in the long run, I do this for fun. If I can do the lick and like it, I might. I know my limits more than the anyone else knows them. I tell people that if you dont like what I do.........get somebody else. You can do this when you get old and are doing it for fun. This does not mean that those of us in this catagory do not strive to be better......maybe we just cant. |

It's the first thing I ask about at the audition - when I audition for a band, I am auditioning them as much as they are auditioning me.
I want to know how they approach the music - is it photography or is it painting? Are they seeking a person or a machine? As a musician I expect to be judged on my interpretation as well as my execution.
The minute someone says 'can you play it like ____' I'm done.
I don't like egos, I don't like to be told how to play. I am in it for the fun and if I have to play to someone else's detailed specs I'm out the door.
Needless to say I don't get out much...

Yous guy deprive the world of the pleasure of hearing you play for the selfish reason that you want to be you. New poll. How many have been married more than once because they wanted to be who they are as opposed to the dream someone else had. How many struggeled to overcome the bondage of parents trying to fit them into the form they chose for you.

Robert,
There's not much point in playing stock licks just the way XYZ played it..... I would agree that the listeners want to hear the 'hits' the way its been played originally. But, during the past few years I started playing more and more the way I would like to play..... Like I did on my albums. Some guys actually liked it and got their own copies. 
Sounding like yourself playing is far less stressfull and allows your own creativity to surface.
Of course, at my age I'm way past the point of trying to 'prove' myself to anybody.... Now I have lots of fun just playing steel! |

I remember the old days. Now I get a kick out of being able to say: "_____________ is a great picker, dig down in your check book and he will be happy to fly down and play that for you", "I dont care, I like to play on the C6th neck.", "Yeah, but I like to play The Kentucky Waltz".

Roual, I think you might have the right idea in light of the current musical climate. Playing music is more enjoyable now without the strees of a set list and others always comparing my playing to _____. I might even have time to take up hte banjo!

| Nic and Roual have it right.I play about once-twice a week,some paid some not. I play mainly because "I" enjoy it.I am fortunate because the people who listen like it too.If someone asks why I play it that way,my only justification is"cause I want to".Old,crotchety,set in my ways,YEP |

NIC, I hate to judge, but if a player is playing in the night club circuit or bars if you will. A lot of the time you are playing for dudes who are getting drnker by the moment, want remeber much about what you played and only ocassionaly remeber how such and such did it. They are trying to pick up the girl of their dreams and may even wonder the next morning why they thought she was so special at closing time. So why not indulge youself and get better, however remeber to please the real music critics you play with

Robert,
So true, so true.
Thta is precisely the reason I'd rather stay home and try to raise my own standard of playing, than having to play to some inebriated folks in the bars.
I do miss the band situation at times, but only have to remember the bad experiences playing with (mostly) bad musicians (term used very loosely) in equally bad circumstances. ..... Enjoying my playing at home more and more!

I was going to stay out of this one ! but you don't
own the franchise on this one . next year will be my
sixtieth anniversary of Steel guitar , the only thing that
has stopped me from stardom is talent .

Interesting thread. The closest I ever got to all this was to come to understand that when a group was looking for "either a steel or a lead," what they really wanted was you-know-what. I've lost (and been fired from) a gig or two by this mentality.
I'm just as happy playing at Cann's Music and Grandkids' Playroom as elsewhere, and have abandoned house gigs altogether. Sub, casual, temp, jam, where image, ego, style don't count near as much? Glad to help! |
