Just finished viewing Mike Perlowin's Curly
Chalker DVD. What a pleasure, especially for those of us who never had the privaledge of seeing him play live.
Mike did a great thing with this concert.
It's just terrific to see and hear this 'old master' ripping thru his favorite tunes.
For those that may not be familiar with Chalker (if that's possible) this is a must
have for your collection.
If any of you have been enjoying Scotty's
Youtube releases of various ISG sessions (as I have) this CD is a similar but is two total concerts- what a blast.
If you don't have it- get it! |

You are correct Ron...this is a great piece of history. Copies of the DVD will be available at the SWSGA Show in Phoenix, January 24, 25 and 26th. Get yours because, when they are gone, there will be no more!!

I must say I'm disappointed that although there are over 7,000 members of this forum, only around 300 copies of the DVD have been sold. (Which was however, enough to allow me to recoup my investment.)
I can only guess that many of the people here took up the steel after Chalker's death and are unaware of who he was and what he did.
It's understandable that everybody is primarily concerned with learning how to play, but even so, every player should have some knowledge of our instrument's history and it's greatest players in the past.
One player who shall remain nameless actually told me "I just wanna learn to play like Tom Brumley, I don't care about some guy who played a bunch of C6 stuff." That's like saying "I just wanna learn to play guitar like Albert Lee, I don't wanna hear this guy Chet Atkins who played finger style."
Curly Chalker was one of the greatest steel players, possibly THE greatest steel player of all time. There has never been anybody like him, and it's highly doubtful there never will be.
Every steel guitarist owes it to themselves to check him out, either through this DVD or through his wonderful Counterpoint, Big Hits on Big Steel, Nevada breaks, and More ways to Play albums. (Note: Nashville Sundown is also a very good album, but does not reflect Chalker's musical personality. It's worth getting for it's own sake, but if you want to hear the REAL Curly Chalkler, you need to get one of the others.)
If you've never heard any of this man's recordings, you owe it to yourself to do so. If you don't know who he was, or what he did, you owe it to yourself to find out. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike, I think it may be an idea to promote the DVD by posting one or two clips on youtube.com.
The reason I am suggesting this is, that previously VHS videos and such of other famous artists have circulated and turned out to be of bad quality (not implying yours is... to the contrary).
About the C6th slant: I for one was surprised to find out by material put on youtube.com, what a great E9th player he was and how he certainly made a good point against that stupid assumption an (old) MSA wouldn't have the sound to cut it in Nashville style country.
John, I have no idea what the deal with these DVD's and Mr. Chalker and any interested is of has been. However, I doubt that at only 300 copies sold there would be any profit yet, unless you consider gross sale as such profit (?).

This is just my opinion,But I don't think anyone has EVER or never WILL top Curly,He was'nt only a master of the 6th neck, but the 9th as well. The backup band on this is worth the price alone,If you don't have this you DON'T know what you are missing.Jim Bob Sedgwick does some fine picking on this also. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Well, guys, here's the scoop.
I bought the DVD from Mike. Mike, actually I bought 2 and sent one to a fellow Steel player, Nils Farstad, in Norway. So your disc is traveling for sure.
It is your loss, everybody who did not buy Curly's CD. It is a "must have", like BE's Black album.
A good barometer for judging what sounds good and what sounds not so good is a little child. Their heads are uncluttered with preconceived ideas of what sounds right or wrong.
Remember I posted pics and story about my little granddaughter Kate? At 2 and a half, she developed a liking for Curly's steel playing. So every time she came over, she had to listen to Alberta Bound. She still does once in a while, and it's been more than 6 months.
If a small child likes it, you can bet it is quality music!
I suggest that everybody get in line for Curly's DVD. It won't be around forever. |

1- As of this point there are no profits. I've barely recovered my expenses.
2- I've spoken with Curly's son Carrol any number of times about this project, and he gave me his permission top to it. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

for those that are familiar with Curly's
recordings this DVD attests to his great
improvisation skills- since many of his favorite tunes that were on his recordings
are played here completely different with new ideas, tempos and feeling and Curly really plays 'on the edge'.
For those that like Jazz on PSG, this is really a must have. |

I too have the DVD and it is great. Mike has given me permission to post a cut or two on YouTube. I will do this right after the 1st. of the year. I will post here when this is done. If you have not done so, subscribe to "Steelpicker" on YouTube.

I'm sorry and disappointed to hear this but glad you broke even financially. Still it has to be frustrating given all the initial buzz about the DVD.
Bill Ferguson, this sounds like a good idea - I hope more folks will add the Curly DVD to their collection as a result. |

The first time I heard Curly was in '61. Gene Breeden, of the studio of the same name in Nashville, was managing a music store in Visalia, CA and he had the "Travis" album and my world changed and has never been the same.
Curly did more with a Fender 1000 in that session that will never be duplicated. His "Big Hits On Big Steel" on a Fender 2000 is the most dazzling C6 project that has yet to be equaled. It was released on Columbia through the efforts of Pete Drake. Then there was the "Counterpoint" with an orchestra that almost never got released, but Tom Bradshaw saved the day.
And now, thanks to Mike, we have a visual, as well as audio of the Master, himself. What a shame there wasn't more video of this giant.
I have many steel heros, but Curly occupies the head chair. Thanks again, Mike. You all had better get a your copy, NOW. |

Uh - I need to ask a real dumb question at this point -
Just exactly *WHERE* can one purchase this DVD?
I don't see it in the CDs & Tapes section, and I don't see it on Mr. Perlowin's web site; I think I've just exposed my weak hunting skills... ![Oh Well](images/smiles/icon_ohwell.gif) |

Marc, you cam buy the DVD directly from me, or from the forum catalog (DVDs and videos are in a separate section from audio recordings), or from Scotty, or Billy Carr, or Russ Rask up in Spokane WA.
Additionally, the Southwest Steel Guitar Association will be selling the DVDs at their upcoming show next month. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Hat's off to Mike Perlowin and his team producing the Curly Chalker DVD's. These videos are a lifetime worth of C-6th instruction. We all know chords and single note passages can be played at different places on the fretboard. With these DVD's, we can see where and how Curly is running his chords and lines. I was finally able to accurately transcibed "Danny Boy" because of this DVD. Short of traveling to Texas and taking lessons from Johnny Cox, these videos are the best way to learn Chalker's style. |

My two cents:
1)Chalker was of course a one of a kind, amazing, and very influential player (I feel lucky to have seen him play live a fair amount). I searched out a copy of "Big Hits on Big Steel" when I was a beginner after reading a "Guitar Player" article on him and it definitely widened my ideas of what a pedal steel could do.
2)The DVD is a great document of his playing (therefore an important part of steel history) and definitely worth owning just for the enjoyment. Aside from that, it seems worth considering that it's a good idea to support those who put time and money into making rare steel material available; it was obviously a labor of love for Mike as opposed to a money making venture and he deserves a lot of credit IMHO.
Thanks Mike! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Thanks guys. I'd like to point out 3 things.
1- Johnny Cox shot the St Louis footage. I forgot to give him credit earlier. Sorry about that Johnny.
2- I authorized and financed the project, but the actually author of the DVD was Michael Brebes. Without his dediction and hard work, the DVD would not exist, and he deserves as much credit as I do.
3- This wasn't exactly a labor of love so much as an obligation to see that this footage was preserved.
Parts 2 and 3 of the DVD were from Curly's concert that was produced by the late Jack Lox. Jack also produced concerts featuring Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan. Jimmy Day, and one that featured local players including Red Rhodes and J.S. Maness. All those concerts were videotaped but all the tapes were lost when Jack died. Fortunately jack let me copy this one, so I ended as caretaker of what became the master tape.
I couldn't let this footage disappear. I HAD to preserve it in some way. I was originally thinking of film, but when DVD technology came along, that was the way to go. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
