I am a lead guitarist/steel player, plus I sing a lot so I haven't done an all steel gig in decades..
I am playing tonight[12/22} near Syracuse with a great band called the Custom Taylor Band.. One of central NY's premier country bands... I am going in COLD!!!They do some originals too...
Actually a bit on edge, they have a good steel player[sacred steel stylist] that I am filling in for, and I hope I do well.. I'll tell you guys if I stunk the stage up... wish me luck... bob |

Bob, dont get nervous ,go out and have fun. if you screw up,just look at the lead guitar player, and shake your head. works for me. i"m always looking at my lead player. hum! TK

Bob,
A lot of us have heard the samples you've posted of your playing, there's not a doubt in my mind that you'll do great.
So the next thing to do is lighten up on your self and have fun these folks are lucky to get a sub with your talent!

You know, actually I forgot I have done a few all steel gigs in the past few years.. They were for a local original neo folk/alt whatever/ songwriter guy, several years back, but were so awful, my mind went into psycho protective shutdown mode and blacked out all recollection...
In any case, when I set up and started seeing the other guys filtering in, I could tell these guys meant business... The bass player had an ultra high end Lakland bass, with a Demeter tube pre amp and a Crest power amp poweing his Hartke cab.. I mean tip top stuff....
These guys were terrific players.. Drummer and bass were in the very upper echelon of players I have ever worked with, guitar player was liquid fire on his tele, fine lead singer [African American C&W singer ] , and fine acoustic rythmn player 2nd vocalist too.. They are acknowledged as the best country band in the Syracuse area... Thier steel guy is a hot sacred steel player from Syracuse, firmly entrenched in the R Randolph approach to steel.. He can play country but its not what he does best..
Not sure of his status, but hey, there I was..
anyway, I'll try to be kinda humble here,.. but well,, I aced it.. Actually sounded like I had played with them for years.
I attribute this to the astoundingly SOLID rythymn section.. These cats layed down a big fat groove so thick you could walk on it.. It was just easy to play well and stay within my game plan.. effortless..
The guitarist and I went back and forth with no effort.. Real natural, piece of cake.
I could utilize my anachronistic right hand staccato palm blocking stylings to the max, and these guys just loved it.. When I did my fast solos on stuff like Lotta Leavin Left To Do, HW 40 Blues, Married to a Waitress, I got smiles,handshakes, and pats on the back all around.
Man I felt like I was Speedy West or somethin.. lol...
They are a pretty loud band but I was ok in the mix.. I got a lot of compliments from the sound guy, and fans of the band, they wanted to know how I knew all the songs, I politely told them I did not, but was quite experienced and the guys made it easy to play well..
The drummer said I laid down a nice thick "pad" with my playing style that was missing before in the band...
Hey man, I can do
I -IV- V7-I without moving the bar with the best of them.. lol.. Thats all I needed 90% of the time, add a few cheap E9 cliche' licks and a few fast sloppy palm blocked solos, and I was golden... They want me to play Jan 12 with them, and I know they probably want me on a more permanent basis as things were constantly talked about in a "future tense" or "looking forward" context as far as my position was concerned..
I had the feeling I could have made the commitment there and then, NO problem, but I kept my place and let them think about what they want to do, but I was put on notice that I probably could have the gig if I wanted it...we'll see.
I am just pretty happy I can still cut it and actually shine a bit with the best the local scene has to offer... I was not sure if my abilities were "current" enough on steel.. I still play a pretty basic early 70's style a la Cage,Young,Garcia, Perkins, Call etc, and am not confident in its "validity" in modern music.

Just type in Custom Taylor Band .. they have a bunch of stuff from a live gig, Remember that the lead guitarist on these older vids is gone,replaced by the VERY good player I worked with last night... huge difference in band sound ..... anyway, thanks for reading, I am a more confident musician as I type this..... bob |

yeah you know how I am Fred, think the worst first,and hope I don't stink as oppossed to going at it with a postive attitude, knowing I am experienced and will be fine....
sometimes,I think I need to be smacked...however I'm such a masochist sometimes, I'd probably like it! ..

| Actually Bob, it was a lot of fun but the guys told me I looked bored!!,, I wasn't at all, but was just very relaxed, because it really is super easy to play with solid musicians that are tight together,, I also wanted not to appear too anxious,but in reality may have taken the nonchallance too far in the wrong direction... I was trying to play it cool, but may have overplayed it into boredom.. I explained to the guys how much I enjoyed the band, and hpoed to work with them again... The gig on Jan 12 should be terrific... bob |

I envy you Bob! I'm still pulling double duty in the band I'm in. But like those guys, the fellas I'm working with are top notch as far as the local scene goes. They all have played together off and on for over 25 years and it makes my job so much easier. I sometimes feel guilty taking the cash but as soon as I lift my amp and steel after the show the guilt subsides.
