I'd like to learn to play the background/rhythm chord progression (vs. the lead/melody) to Hoagy Charmichael's tune, "the Nearness of You" on my 8 string lap tuned from the bottom ACEGACED (2 on top). Whatever resources or direct info you can give me will be appreciated.

A simplified version would be great, but the chords that I don't know are Fmaj7, Cm7, Cm7/F, F7#5, Bbdim7, C7, Gm7b5, C7b9, Cm/F, D7b9, C7sus. I imagine that the steel guitar wouldn't play the full chord always. Thanks.

Peter. Here is an MP3 I did earlier in the year on this song. I did not write out the chords, but maybe you can get some ideas from the chords I used. The tuning for this is 8 string extended Leavitt.
Click on this link and then click the download box.

Peter When you say the chords you don't know, what exactly do you mean ?.

Do you mean that you don't know how or where to play those chords ON the C6th tuning, or do you mean that you don't know the chord progression of the song ?

Rarely, usually just the essential partials..the root is more often than not the bass player's job.

Steinar's group, 'Local Zoo' does a nice job of this song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy_kOh8r9-I

"Walkin' My Baby Back Home," was quite good, too. Steiner is another one of those guys who is getting more out of 6 strings than I am currently managing to get out of eight. I think I'll go practice now.

Try "POLKA DOTS and MOONBEAMS"...a great song and quite challenging for the steel guitar.
