We have a new Steel Guitar Association in New England and it is for Pedal Steels,Lap Steels,Dobros. It is also for all levels of players from Beginners to Advanced players.It is called New England Steel Guitar Association and will be Chartered with the Secertary of States office.We will have 6 to 8 Mini Shows a year and a big one once a year. We have 18 member to start this Association off with and will be adding all the time.I will keep you posted on our first meeting which will be held at the American Legion Post 15 in East Greenwich Rhode Island on Route 1 south of Town.

I forgot to mention that anyone is welcome to join no mater what your level of playing.I have people that will teach new steel players and Lap steels plus Dobro to play.We are leaning to January 20th for the first meeting if not before.

| This certainly is an ambitious undertaking.New England has a few clubs now that are operating with what takes a lot of effort from the members they have...The PSGA which is probably one of the Countrys best, is sort of the big Daddy with its annual show which hopes to get and needs support from the New England area. Rhode Island seems to be headed in a good direction. . Maine had its 1st show which was a success..And Frank Caruso in Mass has a very succesful show each year..Are there more players out there that can be gathered without hurting any of these already established clubs?...Wouldn't just uniting and supporting the already established clubs be easier?..Having two clubs based in the same general area seems like it could become a conflict of interest. But anything sincere that can be for the betterment and promotion of the Steel guitar deserves support. |

| You can't have too many steel groups IMHO !! Frankies show is once a year, the RISGA show is once a year with quarterly meetings with jams and Sam is looking to have monthly jam sessions with everybody invited to play at the jam sessions. Most of us steelers don't have the opportunity to play out much and any time I can get out to play a little and listen to other steel players I'll be there !! I would join all the clubs in my area if I could !! Just my thoughts !! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal geezer ) |

New up date on New England Steel Guitar Asasociation.We will be having our first meeting on January 20th at 1:00PM to 5:00PM At the American Legion Post 15 in East Greenwich Rhode Island.We will have a Pot Luck Lunch and then the meeting.We will discuse what we want to do and where we are going with the new Association.After the meeting we will have about one hour of better steel Players showing less experienced Steel Players how to do the Scales and so on.Then we will have a round Robin and everyone will get their turn to play no matter what their Playing Level.Everyone is welcome to Join if they want to.

Directions to the American Legion Post 15 East Greenwich Rhode Island.
From the North Route. I-95 south to Route 4 off to your left go under bridge at curve and take the Exit immediately after the bridge go around and up the ramp to the traffic light and take a right that is Frenchtown RD.follow to Route 1 take a right on Route one at the Sunoco Station and go south on Route 1 and as you go down the Hill about half way down look for the two big Cannons on your left and that is the American Legion Post 15.
From the South.I-95 take exit 8 which is Route 2 South get in the left lane immediately and go to the First Traffic Light and take a left and follow Frenchtown Road to Route 1 take a right on route 1at the Sunoco Station and go South on Route 1 and as you go down the Hill about half way down look for the Two Cannons on your left and that is the Americn Legion Post 15

Sam, you are a motivated individual and one who truly loves the steel guitar and I've always respected that.
I hope you find this endeavor of yours is worth it by starting what essentially is a deliberately planned rival organization to RISGA, the original steel guitar association that you yourself helped start in RI.
I was hoping you and the few others that are resigning from RISGA would have seen the value in sticking together.... for united we stand, divided we (may) fall.
It serves no purpose to seperate the many talented steel players we have in this area and form rival organizations, other than satisfy the ego, I suppose.
Nevertheless, good luck to you and may you continue to enjoy the pleasures steel guitar music brings to all of us.
But music sounds a little bit sweeter when there is harmony.... |

Hi Sam, I am in total agreement with Tony Palmer. Sam, you and I go back a long way, when you and I were both learning to play steel back in the early 80`s I was in a band called "Bullseye". Shortly after I met a man who had a knack for luring steel pickers together. Although he didn`t play that well, the late John Jiacovelle made up for it as a leader. He would call a bunch of local pickers to go as a group when one of us was playing a gig. He initiated the very first steel show. He kept negotiating with the president of the R.I.C.M.A. who was Bob Demoranville. In the spring of 1996 Bob agreed to do a yodeling contest that included a steel show. Five of us performed . The players were: Nick Frongillo, Joe Ferri, Roger Trahan, Andy Perry, and Yours truly. Back then it was my dream to have a local R.I. club. What would John think if he witnessed what his buddy Sam was doing now?
I have been thankful aand excited throughout the last decade. RISGA has been a great mental high for me. The association almost disbanded once when you were relocating all over the country; but we persevered and grew even stronger. In the last three years we had three successful steel shows, with Presidents Tony Palmer. Roger Trahan, and Marcia Rodrigues. For the first time in our association I am very sad that you are starting a renegade organization. As Joe Casey and Tony Palmer said, it is more sensible to be united as one friendly club. |

Sam,
I too agree with Tony, but somewhere along the way your motivation turned to egoism. It stopped being about the Steel Guitar and RISGA and became about you, which is why I believe you have split to start this brand new organization.
Although our last show was a success it could have been so much better had you just put your personal reservations aside and your great organizational skills to work. You could have been such a tremendous asset to the club had you just tried over this past year instead of letting your ego get in the way.
I too wish you the best in your endeavor wherever you feel it will take you personally. Just do the Steel Guitar Community a favor and don’t collide with us. |

Sam, It is too bad all these STEEL FRIENDS wanted to go so professional and undermine those that could not play as well as they can. It does not matter how well you play (except when you are out getting payed for such) but to love the steel and have some fun with it. And then have someone take over and have everything THEIR way, it just was not fun anymore.
It would be nice to have one big organization and everyone get along, but that is not going to happen the way the RISGA is being run now. We are looking forward to the new organization and having fun again with some old friends and some new ones. KEEP STEELING SAM

| Being a former member of the RISGA and knowing Sam and Tony personally as well as many of the other fine Northeast players, it was sort of sad for me to read this post. I believe you are most fortunate to live in close proximity to one another as you do, (the result of living in smaller states) and can band together for meetings and shows with relative ease. I can only envy you. Since relocating to Virginia I have only met only two or three other players and we are some distance apart. I sincerely hope you can put aside your differences and once again focus on what brought everyone together initially, the love of one very aggravating but rewarding instrument..... Happy Holidays to all and best wishes in the coming year. |
