Topic: Anybody wannt take a chance on a 25 meg file? |

I recently finished the most ambitious thing I've ever attempted. It's a piece called "Capriccio Espagnol" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The piece is 15 minutes long, required 109 tracks to record, and was harder and took longer to mix than to record in the first place.
I have an MP3 file I can send but it's over 25 megs. I've been told that A file that size can clog up your mailbox and prevent any further delivery till it's downloaded.
I'll E-mail the file to anybody who wants it, but please be aware of the possible problem is could cause.

A lot of isp's will not accept attachments that large and will bounce it back to you.
You should put it up on your website and let people download it. You can password protect the folder you put it in and send people the password in an email instead. |

John you are right. I sent Carl the file and it bounced because it was too large.
Sorry Carl, I tried.
The CD will be ready sometime in the spring. I'm afraid you have to wait till then to hear ny latest bit of insanity.

There are lots of file sending services that are free. I use www.yousendit.com a lot. The recipient gets an email with a link to download it. You can send up to 100MB. So, why don't you send me the file that way and try it out?...

This file did NOT crash my puter or email server.
The piece is quite an accomplishment and happens to be one of my favorite pieces.
Highly recommended.

I have a problem within my system that prohibits me from sending the file directly from yousendit.com, but I was able to upload it and it can be accessed here:

As I mentioned, the piece is 15 minutes long, and has to be heard in it's entirety to be appreciated, as it builds in intensity as it goes along. (It only required the 109 tracks for the very last few minutes.)
It's an amazing composition. It's really happy, exciting, joyful, feel-good music that makes you smile when you hear it. I hope those of you who download it enjoy it, even though it;s about as far from country as you can get.
This is one of the pieces that will appear on my next CD, which I hope to have out sometime in the springtime.
Oh, and Thanks Charlie for the kind words. And please take note that from this moment on, I will no longer refer to the guitar you bought from me as "our" guitar. It's Your guitar from now on.

Another amazing work by Mike Perlowin.
Downloaded via fiber optic hookup, and burned to a CD.
According to my computer, it is 16 minutes amd 32 seconds long.

I've got it, too! Wow, what a masterpiece ... not only musically, but also from a recording point of view. I particularly liked the part around 10 minutes into the piece, really exciting instrumental parts there.
Was this done with your new MSA guitar?

Jan, I actually recorded this on the green guitar pictured in my avatar. The tracks were laid down before I received the Milly. I've spent the last year editing and mixing them.
The editing and mixing was far more difficult and time consuming than playing the various parts.

Bob, if I put up too much, you'll have it all and not buy the CD and then I won't be able to afford Howard's 30-50 piece orchestra. 
Seriously, the CD isn't finished yet. I'm still waiting for the last few percussion tracks for a different piece. My percussionist just got off the road after a 2 month tour, so he will be able to work on my stuff for a few weeks, and hopefully will get it all done before he has to go back out again.

May I ask you if you are doing some recording on this where the track is recorded at one speed and then sped up and vice versa also.
You must be using every studio trick in the book to get something like this done. |

Yes Bill. I bot sped up the tape at some points, and slowed it down at others. One of the effects I wanted (on one of the other pieces,) was an E-bow like sustain on a bass. After much experimentation, I decided that the best way to get it was to record the track on a guitar and slow the tape down.
Undoubtedly some people will think of this as "cheating."
The studio can be a sonic camera, taking an "aural photograph" of a live performance, but it can also be an artists canvass, allowing the artist to create something that is not representative of real life. I think the best example is Sargent Pepper. The difference is like the difference between a photograph and a painting.
The way I see it, there's room for all, and it's all good.

That's a pretty astute observation Bob, There are many similarities between this piece and Ravel's great work.
The entire CD is a program of music from Spain, however, I didn't record that particular piece.
Had I done everything I wanted to, it would have been a 2 CD set.

Alan, I used a lot of different guitars and basses, as well as banjo, mandolin and autoharp. The "horns" are steels played with distortion. The "piano" notes were played on the steel, one at a time, individually articulated. The Dobro sounds were produced by a match-bro.
There were no keyboards used at any time.
The drums were played by hand. The original tracks were recorded to a click track, and the drums (played by Dave Beyer, who also played all the songs on my West Side Story CD) were added later.

Really nice! No wonder the song has taken a long time to record. Now I'm even more impressed.
It reminds me of the liner notes on Allan Holdsworth's 'Road Games' LP, where it was stated: "There is no synthesizer or keyboards on this record". Yet there are many sounds on Road Games that are very keyboard-like.
