I was just wondering where most of us spend time with our guitars. So here is a new poll! Let's find out.
"Great input guys. We get lots of talk on the forum about a lot of things. I always wonder about the background of some. Someone who always plays in his living room is certainly going to have a different approach than someone who always play bars. The bar picker is going to have a different approach than someone who always (like myself) plays shows. Get my drift? I know when I played a lot of clubs there was room for improve and playing stuff you never heard before (someone in the crowd wants to sing). Now doing shows everything is a very precise arrangement and lots of pressure not to screw up!!! What do you think, does this have much effect on a response to a question? If so how much and should the people involved take it into concideration?"

Church picker here. I only play away from my church 3 or 4 times a year, and those are church related functions. I don't have time to play anywhere else. Smile

My experience has been limited to actually playing on two occasions at the local Elk's club. My best experience comes from a once-a-month "jam" at a local housing development that sports a beautiful log community center. We provide music for retired people who live in this development, and they have pie socials and things around our playing. I play with family members, friends, and we have a full compliment to make a band of sorts. It has been great practice and I can try to make my short-term playing time become better by not fearing what I try to play.

Hey Darvin, that's great that you play your steel in church. At my church here in CA, I played my steel ONE time, and got the comment that "you're making it sound like a saloon in here." I haven't used the steel there since...

Maybe its a Texas thing?

Mostly honky tonks and bars,I have always loved Southern Gospal music and would enjoy playing it,If I could afford to do so I would,But I'm a poor man and it's a hard cold fact it takes money to eat and pay bills,I have friends that play gospal music, they may travel hundreds of miles to play, get to eat fried chicken and if they are lucky a little fuel money for their bus, don't you know.

I spend most of my playing for senior citisons, senior club Valdosta, a dance for seniors in Quitman. Some shows, Saluda, Bluntstown, etc, We did for a while 1 show a month at the VA Hos. Started a senior show on Monday nights for seniors, every Monday at Providence, been running for more than a year.
No pay but a good feeling, they come up and give you a hug and say how much they enjoy the show.
Even at our Fl. club meeting they come up hug and kiss you on the cheek, what could be more rewarding???

Whip, I'd say that really takes the fun out of it. Or for me at least.

I've always liked playing the way I felt the song at the time. Different singers doing the same song, can change the whole aspect.

You're definitely making bigger bucks doing the shows, but in all honesty, since you're not really free to play as you might otherwise feel it, has that taken the real pleasure out of it, in at least, some small way for you or not?

For me, it was mostly Honky Tonks, Clubs, and one h''l of a great time...... Don

Although I have played in church and volunteer at a nursing home, most my playing is at dances and luckily most people go to these to really get into dancing!

Steve G., I can understand the put down it must have been at the church. Thankfully, not all churches are that way. Most of my playing for 15 or more years as week-end warrior traveling for Gospel groups was in church venues, some shows, some fairs, etc. When I retired from the road travel 1-05, I had to look at a number of churchs in order to find one where it would be acceptable that I could settle down in and play steel there.

Darvin, be thankful for your church.

And Bama Charlie, what you said is for sure the truth, don'tchaknow. No money in it, unless full time national travel, and most of those groups don't carry a band in recent years.

God Bless, and Merry Christmas to all

I've played many different types of clubs, from the roughneck clubs with dirt on the floor to the country clubs with richiepoos. Its all in a lifetime, I'm 75 now and still have a regular Friday and Saturday night gig at the VFW and having fun doing it, I might retire when I'm 80, Keep Steeling, Shorty

Don, I know what your saying. At times it does get a little redundant. I've played 25 or 30 songs on the list for several years. At times I wonder if it actually gets in the way of my musical growth. I have to get involved with a good jam session a couple times a year just to let my hair down and see how off the wall I can get. Shows do have their rewards though. To perform in front of several thousand folks and just have a night when the whole band nails everything, it's like heaven! My whole idea on this post though is "Does where we play most, effect the way we would answer a question here on the forum?
