My granddaughter is learning to play the flute and I would like to try and play some songs with her on my steel(Eharp). Has anyone played steel with a flute, know of anyone that has, or can recommend a CD to listen to?

Duane, this is really something because I have a Granddaughter learning to play the flute also and just this past weekend I mentioned to her that she and I should work up a song for the flute and steel guitar. After listening to Kay's song I'm more convinced than ever that a flute and steel guitar really compliment each other.

Thanks Kay for posting your song that was absolutely beautiful.

Thanks a million Kay for posting that song. I should have known you had one available. Like all of your songs it is beautiful. Mel, if you and I discover any more similarities I will start believing we are twins!

Duane and Mel,

The flute has a very pure waveform and so too does the steel when played simply and while trying to emulate the human voice. So it is no great surprise that they sound complimentary. The steel has the "attack" caused by the right hand picking which makes for interesting contrast with the pure tone of the flute.

Grateful for the appreciation. Maybe you should post your efforts with your grand-daughters on the forum when you have them ready!

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Kay

Duane, Check out Derek Trucks last two CDs. He's a virtuoso (IMHO) slide guitar player and his band utilizes the flute a lot. Sounds really good with flute and slide together.

I attest to you all without hesitation that a flute or Panflute goes beautifully with a steel guitar. I am learning to play a panflute and have been having a ball taping then over taping steel and panflute.

Love Song Of Kalua is a beautiful version to play as a duet. To add to the beauty of the blending find someone who plays vibes or Marimba.

There is a fellow in Honolulu by the name of Brad White; http://pan-flute.com who is a master of the panflute and would dearly love to play with some of the better steelers in Hawaii.

If any of our Hawaiian member would like I can give you his phone number.

I believe the author and publisher of the FLAT/SQUARE RECORD book.....did an LP years ago that featured flute and steel. Winnie Winston.....was his name.
