right now I am using CD tracks for my little group that does the nursing home scene, I discovered yesterday that running the output of the sony CD player into a direct box & using a low impedance mic cable to my Fender Pa amp, it seems to make the Cds sound clearer than running them with a regular guitar cable? Is this possible or am I nuts?? & just thinking its better?? If this does effect the sound, why is that?

Maybe I should have asked a smart fellow like Ken Fox to comment on this?

How long is the guitar cable and what is the quality of the cable - that will have an affect on the overall sound. With the direct box and low Z mic cable the length of the line is not an issue and fidelity loss is not an issue.

Mismatching the impedence of devices, e.g. the output of the CD player and the input on the P.A. system can also have an affect.

Jack: I had been & still am using a 'Y' cable & that was attached to a 10' George L cable, like I use for all my steel guitar hookups, but since I ran it through a direct box & the low impedance mike cable to my Fender Pa mixer amp, it just seems like the tracks all sound much better?? I have no clue one this, but will continue to hook my Sony player into the direct box. I had suffered from lousy cables years ago, till I started using the Geo L ones, they seem to do a great job, in most cases, just not as good as the low imp cable & direct box idea. I though maybe others might want to give this a try. I use lots of tracks with guitar & bass on them, so any improvement I will take!!

Ernie, I suspect the issue is the impedence mis-match that the direct box is taking care of.

I have a Peavey XR600F PA mixer/amp and it has a separate input with RCA jacks for a CD or casette player, that is the correct impedence.

Jack: I have those on my fender Pa, but by putting that player into a channel of the Pa, I can control the floor monitors & the out front sound much better, I use a little Behringer mixer on top of the fender to so I can use the floor monitor stereo amp and also run a line over to a Fender keyboard amp that I use sitting beside my Evans, it lets me hear everything better, I admit, I am probably a nut case, but thats the way I like it with the tracks - I like to be surrounded by them & mix a little of my steel from the Evans into overall mix. Makes me sound like 'Lawrence Welk'!! thanks for you input.
