Topic: I need help with the basic harmonized walk between chords |

| I am trying to take my playing from the practice room to the stage. I have tons of licks that I am working with, but the basic chord scale walks that I hear in almost all recordings are messing with me. If some one could help with examples in the key of G between the 1 chord and the 4 or the 5 chord to the 1, or any other combination would be very helpful. I am at everyones mercy, because I can't seem to figure it out on my own. And I can't use my licks without jumping around, and chopping up the song into runs, instead of flowing into runs like the steel is made to be played. |

Hi Jett, I like to go from a G to a GMaj.(Bm7) to a G6,(Em7) to the C chord. In other words, at the third frett, in E9 tuning, play a g chord, use your E to Eb, lever for the Maj.7, release the lever and use your A pedal for the G6 and then go to the C chord. Hope this helps. Larry

Dozens of ways,,, from very spicey to plain vanilla,,,
A plain vanilla,,,,strings 5 and 8 on 3rd fret open (G),,A pedal (Em),,6th fret F lever (G7),,8th fret strings 5 and 8 open (C). You could also use strings 4-5 throughout. The "official" steps between the 1 (G) chord and the 4 (C)chord would be 2m (Am)and 3m (Bm)
Like I said,,dozens of ways,,,and those are the things that add "flavor" to music. |

Bump. I would like to see more of these moves - with many variations. Maybe some using the AB-down position as the 1 chord instead of the no-pedals starting point. Also, moves to other progressions than just 1 to 4.
These essential moves are simple once I see them, but I have a hard time finding them. The two replies above are very helpful. I would like to see some more.
PS: There have been several good threads on here lately that have been very helpful for beginners like me (like the one started by Calvin Walley about "where do I find it"). I think this could be another, although it might fit better in Pedal Steel instead of Tabulature. Maybe it would draw more replies there. |

Jett, I think what we're trying to do is give you examples of the chord scale that Jeff Newman taught. I think if you use these chords when in G it would work for you. G Am Bm C D Em F#dim G

I am playing a vanilla George Jones "Wine Colored Roses" The I think it is C any way has a "G7" to "C" change. I would like suggestions to walk up to the "C" chord. There is also a D7 to C7 a couple of measures any suggestions?

Good c harmonized scale:
Cmaj, Dmin, Emin, Fmaj, Gmaj, Amin, Bdim, Cmaj
Start at fret 3 ab down for your C Strings 10,8,6
back to 1st fret a down for dm strings 8,6,5
3rd fret a down for em strings 8,6,5
4fret a down with f (e raise lever)for fmaj strings 8,6,5
6thfret a down with f for gmaj strings 8,6,5
8th fret a down for amin strings 8,6,5
6th fret f down for b dim strings 5,4,3
8th fret open for c octive strings 5,4,3
From the 5maj to the 1maj, (g to c)I like this:
10ab >8b+edrop lever>8 open
Gmaj g7 cmaj

Steve & Larry, Thanks for asking guys. No, I do it the hard way, in MS Word. It is a slow go, but I've found that I get more out of it myself that way. The hard part is getting it into the forum format to up load. I use copy and paste, then massage it until the "preview" looks acceptable. It is a little time consuming, but I'm retired and enjoy passing on what I am able. Best part is, as my old mind goes, this stock pile of licks and tricks is growing.
Steve, I've used Excel before, but that seems even a little more tricky. I may have to give that a try once again, but for now this works fairly well.

Thanks again guys this is helping alot. This is also making my mind up to add a f lever to my sho bud 6139 cause I just have the E lever, and everyone seems to use the F lever for dim and 7's

That a/f combo for majors will make your life easier! I rarely use the dim chord unless I find myself in the wrong position with the bar,,but the A/F alone opens up so much.

Dick - Thank you so much - I am humbled - alot of people probably play that all on strings 8 and 5 starting at the 1st fret but, I like the tiny extra bit that the 9th string gives plus it puts you closer to fret 6 - the neat thing about steel is that there is so many places to grab the same thing - you might play it like this and milk the pedals alot 1______________________________________________________________ ___

So to go from a I to a IV chord you can hit the chords of (in this case) Am and Bm along the way (since they are the II and III chord)?

Dick,
Have you tried copy/pasting your MSword work into Paint? Paint is a standard program under "accessories" on any microsoft based computer. Then save it as a .jpg. No fussing with it on the forum. Here is an example I copied into MSword, then into paint and saved it as a .jpg
I did this upload at 300 pixels, you could choose a larger one that fits the page better. Becomes a simple matter of uploading a picture. I had to adjust my MSword to "narrow margins" to make the lines right.
Let me know if you are interested in more information. I'd be happy to share.
