I recently saw a clip of Tom Brumley telling about his first gig with Buck Owens, He said that Jay MacDonald (Bucks old steel player) had tried to destroy the Fender Pedal steel guitar that was being furnished as a promo to the Buckaroos after being told he was being replaced. I would like to know what ever become of Jay MacDonald, A great steel player in his time.

Very Happy Hi guys, while you are on the subject of folks playing steel for Buck; whom was first, Tom or Ralph?I would wager that it's Ralph, but not positive. And I agree about Jay being a very good steel man.Bernie Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Buck and Wynn Stewart shared Ralph Mooney during a Las Vegas run of shows in 1960, of course Ralph was fast becoming Capitol Records main session steel player over Speedy West, mainly due to the hits produced from Wynn Stewart sessions.

Ralph was never a Buckaroo, so Ralph was the first one to play steel with Buck, Tom was first as a Buckaroo and in the long run cut more sessions with Buck.

I know you was in California once, but,I don't want to pop to many bubbles of disrespect.Just like the question on Jack Tucker I Ask you and got no answer. To many people out here in California have got Credit for others hard work & support, that those others didn't do.If you're Country you know what I mean. Leo, I'm not %100 sure of what you're asking, but Helen 'Peaches' Price who joined as Wynn's drummer in 1960 told me about the Nevada shows from that same year, does that help?

I would guess that if anyone knows what's up with Jay, it would be Larry Petree. Man,wouldn't be great to hear Jay playing again.

I have most of the old albums from the Buck Owens era and Jay is on the cover with Buck, Don Rich, Ken Presley, and Kenny Pierce, the album: Buck Owens-On The Bandstand. Jay does some tasteful licks on the tune, "Touch Me". I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that Jay played for Buck before Ralph did and well before Tom. Miss them there days.

On the studio recordings Ralph played on the first four albums, almost all tracks from '56 to '62, and Jay played on the 5th Buck Owens LP "On The Bandstand" that came out in '63. Tom started the next year in '64.

Jay also played on Buck's LP "Buck Owens Sings Tommy Collins".

Jay's solo rendition of "Release Me" in the LP "On The Bandstand" is one of the best on record, IMO. His improvisations and the emotion he played with are incredible.

Whoa! Very Happy Rolling Eyes
Dick and Alvin; Glad to know there are other forumites whom love Buck's kind of Country as I do; especially the several great steel pickers whom put the finishing touches on all the B.O. recordings. I remember attending a Buck Owens concert in Kingston Ontario many years back. I was expecting to see Jay with him and believe this or not; The steel man with him that night was Jimmy Crawford. But what a show they put on. Jimmy did a fantastic job. But I'm in full agreement with you two; Jay was an out-standing Player. I believe I have all those albums of The Buckaroos. Mighty fine C/W Music..Bernie Rolling Eyes

The first concert I ever went to was The Buck Owens Show, when I was about 9 years old. He had J.D. Maness on steel at that show.
