Maurice, do you think Tommy Young's mod would improve the tone of a brand new MSA?

Stephen....While in St.Louis Tommy was kind enough to invite me to play a guitar which had his "mod" installed, and it sounded exceptionally good. At the time he did not have another guitar available which was not equipped for comparison, so for me, the end result was not fully conclusive.

The true test for me would be similar to the one I suggested in my thread about tone earlier this year concerning what I believe to be players inability to consistently discern an identifiable tone characteristic inherent in any major brand of steel guitar....when the listener could not see the guitar being played.

Were I to have two MSA guitars sat side by side, one equipped with the "mod" and one not, and were myself or anyone else to have the ability to consistently hear a distinct tone advantage while not having the ability to actually see which guitar was being played....I would then be convinced.

So to respond to your question......At this time I have no way of knowing if the "mod" would make a consistent and identiable difference, but I do know noone has ever told me that without question they could identify an inherent tone of any major brand of steel guitar I was playing if they could not see which guitar I was playing.

Stevie, with it's modular pickup system, a new MSA can produce different sounds when you use different pickups.

Recently another MSA owner and I got together and played each of our guitars through 4 different pickups. (True tone, Tone-aligner, the stock George L, and my EMG active pickup.) We could not distinguish any difference in tone between our guitars when we used the same pickup, despite the fact that I have a Milly and the other fellow has a studio Pro, but the different pickups produced noticeable differences in tone.

I seriously doubt that Tommy Young would work on a carbon fiber guitar. Tommy would be the best one to answer that, though.

No manufacturer is going to recommend a 3rd party modification to their design, or even state publicly that it is an improvement. It's a bit much to ask of Reese, IMHO.

Okay, Perlowin first:We're not talking about changing components here, we're talking about a "mod" performed on a guitar. Of course changing pickups is gonna change the sound of a guitar.
Now, b0b---I didn't ask Reece to recommend the "mod," WHATEVER it is, I merely asked him, as the builder of a state-of-the-art pedal steel, his opinion. Other builders have stated their skepticism of the mod, I just wondered what Reece's opinion would be. And why would Tommy Young be reluctant to work on a carbon fiber guitar?

BOB:: thanks for stating that it should be my call as to where I would or not MOD a carbon fibre guitar as of yet I have not, but haven't ruled them out as a candidate for the MODIFICATIONS that i do, as there is always a possibility for them to accept it as much so as any other guitar built today,


REECE::I personally want to thank you for your honesty and statement as to what you herd when you played one of the 3 guitars I had there in ST. LOUIS,as I have made new enhancements since then and will strive to do more towards finding the TONE that more pickers can and will enjoy out of the GUITARS that I work on, as this is my GOAL, To have each guitar have its very best TONE attainable to my knowledge and abilities


BUT AS WE THE OPERATORS OF THIS INSTRUMENT SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND """THE GUITAR WILL ONLY PRODUCE WHAT THE ABILITY OF ITS OPERATOR ACTUATES IT TO DO """

ps: while in ST.LOUIS there were many that played the guitars that I had there most sounded great while others, I sure didn't want anyone to hear the TONES that they were playing out of the same guitar, one such player played the same guitar that MR. Anderson played but played it thru an open amp. and showed some just how far ""he""" could play it up the neck without getting thin and edgy ""as some call it""" he himself showed that it could be played with very rich notes all the way to the P-UP itself then again others couldn't get past the 26th fret without getting thin and edgy and then a few others just couldn't make the same guitar same amp, same day sound worth anything nowhere on it and this is what I call in the """HANDS"""
