I had a "Pet Rock" that was smarter than her. I saw the show and couldn't believe that she would submit herself to the indignity.

Some people are too stupid to realize how stupid they are. Like me for example; I'm even dumber than I think I am. |

I gotta say...
Ya gotta be pretty dumb,
to think that is a good act to put on,
even on a kids show.
I guess I live on the country of Asia.
I wonder who's in charge?
I wonder what she thinks a continent is.

this may be a little off topic but it reminds me of Little Jimmy Dickens in 1944 I believe; was singing at Brickys tavern in Granite City IL. Skeets Yaney was emcee. A drunk was heckling Jimmy calling him stuff like stupid hillbilly etc. Finally Jimmy quit singing and asked the guy what kind of car he was driving. He said a 34 chev or something close to that and Jimmy said see that customized caddie out side. Thats mine. Damn right I'm a hillbilly. No more heckling. I've heard stories that Jimmy used this a lot of places to quell hecklers. cc |

Like Kevin and Andy, I suspect this may have been a "dumb blonde" put-on, with them laughing all the way to the bank. It's an old schtick.
Either way, I find it very off-putting to describe people as "stupid" because they don't fit into a prescribed pattern of fact knowledge or articulation. In my academic world, I have seen extremely intelligent people reduced to rubble because they don't know or can't articulate some supposedly "essential" facts. You may think there is universal agreement on what knowledge is "essential", but in fact, there is not.
Most people learn the things that are relevant to what they want to do, and that may not include world geography. That has nothing to do with the educational system. I think it has much more to do with what the overall society values, and intellectualism sure as blazes is not one of them these days. IMHO. |

In Kelly’s defense----
I was looking forward to watching this particular episode of “Who’s Smarter Than a 5th Grader” because I knew Kelly Pickler was going to be on it. Not because of her intelligence or looks, but because of her unique ability to be very entertaining. My wife and I enjoyed watching her when she was competing on American Idol, again, not for her tremendous vocal abilities, though she really is pretty good, but because she’s so darn funny and entertaining.
I don’t know how she would fare on an IQ test, but I think she’s either extremely lucky, getting terrific advice from someone, or really is quite smart, or maybe a combination of all of the above. She appears to be making very good decisions regarding the advancement of her singing career and matters regarding public relations keeping the public reminded of who she is, and is also rumored to be involved in a television sitcom in the near future. My guess is that the dumb blonde routine is not all of who she is, but one part of her real personality, and she plays it up when she feels it will work to her advantage, and I consider that to be smart.
My wife and I sort of look at Kelly as a young cute Gracie Allen with a southern accent, and for those of you who don’t have the good fortune of knowing who Gracie Allen was, I recommend looking her up. She was a vaudeville entertainer, radio & television comedian and wife of George Burns. Gracie also used the “dumb” act to her advantage and audiences loved her. As a matter of fact, I was sort of expecting that when Kelly left American Idol, Ryan Seacrest would say “Say Goodbye Kelly” and of course Kelly would have replied “Goodbye Kelly”

I saw that show. I was thinking it's a good thing she has a singing career. No act, believe me. The logic behind her choice on the "president" question was classic blonde. Anyhow, why would she blow the chance to make more money for charity if
she knew the answers to any of the questions? Doesn't make any sense. |

She can SING a song and she is writing,( she wrote the Red High Heels song ) so I guess in the scheme of things she can act as dumb as she wants on TV with Jeff F.
I know plenty of folks who say some pretty dumb things..
In fact, I may be one of them !
I think Kelly is ok, she did come from a very volatile early life and somehow found her way out of it..
Some friends went to see her in Greenville SC , she did a 2 hour set of new and traditional Country tunes from what I was told. They said she was really good and she had a Steel player with her... |

What Tony said. I'm pretty hardcore and provincial about my country music, and I usually don't care for
the popish mainstream stuff, but she got my attention
with the intensity of her performances. She nailed it on the Opry. She projects an impression of real
respect for tradition. I don't believe she'll be a
one hit wonder. Yeah, and she's smarter than she
acts (can you say Lucielle Ball?) |

Regardless of whether this was an act or not, the sad truth is that many of today's young people have not received the same quality of education that those of us of the baby boomer generation got.
For far too many years, education has not been a priority in this country, and the result is what has been described as "the dumbing down of America."
My generation was fortunate enough to have been students when the original Sputnik was launched, and the reaction from those in power at the time was to jump start our education and kick it into high gear.
We need that same kind of national movement to educate our citizens, both children and adults, as well as possible.
We need to make being well educated, cool. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
