Interesting observation for finger players. When I sarted playing years ago I tried and tried to use picks, I never got it. Kept hitting the wrong string, missing notes, catching the bit that goes round the thumb on the strings etc....they just felt all wrong. Eventually I gave up & decided to use my fingers which worked ok (I play fingerstyle guitar). I was always aware I wasn't getting the sound I should but..anyway a few weeks ago at a session the producer asked for more attack. I put on fingerpicks for the first time in years. Lo & behold they felt natural, sounded great, my blocking was better etc. I used 'em on a gig and the band asked if I had a new pickup! The moral is...if you just can't get used to picks...try again!
I'm really pleased; my Carter sounds the way I always knew it could.

I really think some folks just talk themselves into these 'can't wear picks' situations. I had the same problem 30 couple years ago when I started steel. I just kept putting those little suckers on there & after a month or so, it started to work for me. It just like anything else with steel, you have to work at it a bit. I am so glad you are now wearing picks & probably will get a much better sound from you instrument. Granted, maybe there are some times for no picks on steel, but I have not run into that situation at this point, maybe classical music or something like that would work with no picks, but all in all most wear em!!
I am sure someone will give me hell for saying this!!

My biggest problem with picks is that I have twenty-odd years of practice playing six-string without them. I've RECENTLY started using a thumbpick on the six-string, but I still can't get the hang of fingerpicks on my other fingers.

I can think of a few people who play with out picks, by choice, not because they can't play with them, and they get great tone! Does our friend Bobbe Seymour ring any bells? Very Happy
