The Minnesota Steel Guitar Association held a special show yesterday, June 2, 01, and our special guest was John Hughey.
Our show was led off by the Steelkid himself, Eddie Lange, along with his father, Kevin, brother Harry on drums, and Leroy Glazier on guitar.
Lefty Schrage, head of the Northeast Iowa Steel Guitar club followed, backed up by the Rose Family Band, with Dave Rose on guitar, Mike Erikson on drums, and Larry Rose on bass.
Curt Olsen of the Rose Family, suffering from repercussions of his colon cancer was unable to attend, and Lefty kindly sat in with the Rose Family. Alon with Bev Rose, and Larry on vocals, we also had local singer/songwriter Alan Godage, and Betty Lee as guest singers.
Following this band was Al Udeen on steel, with Roger Rainy, his wife Jerry Lyn, on bass, Mike Johnson, guitar, and Brad DeMarr, drums.
John Hughey closed the show with about 1 hour of playing his classic style and was received with great anticipation by everyone.
John and Jean both enjoyed their visit and had a great time visiting with everyone.
Following the Rose Family Band portion, I presented a Lifetime Recognition Award to Curt Olsen, and it was accepted by his wife Jan, due to the fact that Curt was in the hospital at this time, and was really sad that he missed this opportunity to attend the show. It was his heart's desire to play, but physical ailments prevented him from doing so. I also dedicated the show to Curt as my way of showing him how much he was missed.
Thanks John, for coming from Nashville and performing for us here in Minnesota. We all had a great time, and will have to do it again real soon.

It was quite an experience to see John Hughey, after 32yrs, I cant believe he remembered a show in 69 that was my first day out with Connie Smith, when he was, [of course] with Conway!and after all these yrs, to play on the same show with John! What a nice person he is, and not a better player is there anywhere! Thanks Dennis, for asking me to play on the show! >Al Udeen |
