Story goes that my teacher Kiyoshi “Lion” Kobayashi found in an internet music shop a strange looking D8 with some pitch changing mechanism built into each neck. He couldn’t pass her up as a “changer nut” himself who likes to play (and display) Excel D10 with five lock levers. The music store was located in a rural city called Maebashi. Early next morning he was on the train. This travel took him a good part of whole day. While in the train he didn’t waste time and wrote down all the possible playable tunings. There were 33. He was so hilarious to meet the unknown that he paid whatever asked for by the store. According to him it was in superb playing and cosmetic condition. Obviously he was enchanted by her magical charm of ANY TUNING as John Kavanaugh was. But we say to Lion-sensei : Don’t leave home without the tuning chart.

I remember seeing his "fivespeed" Excel in Hawaii a few years back. He was sitting in with Aunty Genoa's group at the Marriot. |

Jack, it was good hearing you at the last HSGA Waikiki steel convention. You sounded quite good, even tho you got such little playing time and shared the stage with Lion, who got the lion's share of musical space.
Here's hoping you make the next one, and have the stage to your self!

Ron, I wish I were with Lion to take the lion's share. No, it was not me. Perhaps a young man who dueted Vini Vini with Lion? He is 26, has played lap steel only for 2 years and by every lesson his sound gets better. You'll be amazed to hear his From Hawaii To You by G13th tuning on Magnatone. I wish I had his youth
