Hi all, I recently acquired a collection of instruments from the estate of Al Hendrickson. He was a jazz player who toured, played, and recorded with the likes of Woody Shaw, Benny Goodman, Henry Mancini, even Dizzy Gillespie. He was also a prominent Hollywood session player throughout the 50's, 60's, and 70's, playing on many TV and movie soundtracks before retiring to the Oregon coast where he passed away earlier this year.

His collection includes a wide variety of instruments - several fine vintage guitars, some amps, and a number of mandolins, ukeleles, banjos, and even a steel guitar, as well as a couple of other oddball items. I will be selling most of the individual instruments (and hoping I will be able to afford to keep one or two in the end) so I thought I would post a master price list here. I will post individual notices on some of them which may be of more interest to this community. Of course, any sales that come from the Forum will generate a donation.

I will also be showing them locally in Portland and perhaps trying some things on ebay.

The conditions are my own personal assessment on a scale of 1-10. Some have been refinished. Some have not been maintained. But the nicer ones are generally very well-kept.

If anyone is interested in a particular item, please let me know and I will get you some pictures & more information. The Epiphone Deluxe, which was Al's main working guitar through the 40's, has an offer pending from a colleague of his. I know 10K for the 175 is high but that's because I don't really want to sell it & I'm going to try to keep it!

Thanks for looking!

Here are some pictures of the Rick. It has a lot of pitting on the surface, no knob on the tone control, and the pickup seems like it needs to be remagged (I am probably going to take Rick Aiello up on his kind offer to help me with this!) Maybe a "5" rating was too kind. . .

The case is scuffed up but solid, with a replacement handle.

I should say that I'm not 100% yet if I am going to sell this item until see where I am on recouping the rest of my investment. But I will make note of who expresses interest here and in what order.

Hey paul,
If the DeArmond PU is the arch-top style, I'll take it. Al was one of my favorite players. There is a Proper Records Jazz guitar collection that has a couple of Al's tunes on it and they are smokin'. He was a very cool guy. I wish I could afford one of his guitars!

Hey Cartwright, it's great to hear from people who know of Al. He was a real old-school player, from a different era. . .the DeArmond is a sound-hole type, it's actually installed in the EKO 12-string but it's a 6-string pickup. I figured I'd pull it out & sell it separately since the EKO needs some work anyway (it has a trapeze bridge installed & the original pin bridge is unused, needs to be strung up & checked out a bit.)

ps I miss my old Burgundy Carter I got from you, I saw it resurface just recently & it's positively Red now. . .

PS here's a picture of Al in a session playing the EKO with this pickup in it. . .wish I knew what they were tracking!

And that's the Deluxe next to him.

The following items have offers pending:

Epiphone Deluxe
Candelas Requinto
Gibson Harp Guitar
Greek Bouzoucki
Chapman Stick
ES-175
Rick Silver Hawaiian

Here is a picture of the Tremoloa in case you haven't seen one. It is billed as the "original Hawaiian instrument" although it was designed & built in Chicago! The armature holds the steel bar like a little steamroller and is attached to a thumbpick over the single melody string. Then there are 4 sets of zither-like chording strings.

It also comes with a bunch of instructional material in the wonderful and unique "Number Music" system which was created for it. . .this is your chance to be a self-accompanied Hawaiian steel player!

Hello, Paul, interesting collection, I hope you can keep that 175....I have not seen a "Hawaiian Tremoloa" for a number of years, they were sold door to door in our little Idaho community in the early 1950's. Rural folks needed something to do besides listen to the radio back then. I remember seeing a tab for "Silent Night" and how the melody was played with that attached thumb pick on the single string, and you found chords in that other bank of strings. I played around a bit with it a my friend's house, and I must say that sparked an interest when the next traveling salesman came and established the "Oahu School of Music" and we enrollees learned lap steel in an open E tuning. Best of luck finding homes for these unique pieces.

Yes the magical "number music" system invented for it puts the Nasvhille numbers to shame. . .quite an odd little gadget. Thanks for looking!

David, what are item(s) are you interested in?

Marty here are a couple of low-res pictures of the Cameo. It doesn't look a whole lot better in person, but it is functional.

Brian, I do have the 175 but I'm going to try to keep it (depends on how everything else sells. . .) The Epiphone Deluxe is on its way to a new home with one of Al's friends.

If I decide I have to move the 175 I'll repost about it.

Also the Chapman Stick is now available again. I don't have any pictures yet but it is in every way identical to this one that just sold on ebay, other than the serial number (Al's is #414):
