In my opinion the Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere is the most musical unit out there.

There's one for sale in the link above and I can tell you that Buck D is good people.
I have not tried the Boss but I listened to the online sound samples and felt that it sounded sort of like an exaggerated impression of the Leslie. The H & K just sounds good. I rigged a hand switch that I velcro near the changer for speed ramp up/ramp down control (a foot pedal works too but who's got a spare foot?)
I have a Line 6 roto thing and I've got roto on my PODxt and they both do an effective job--it's always a head turner when you kick in a leslie effect on steel and audiences love it--but the H & K is my favorite. |

I have the newer Korg RT 20 and i think it sounds better than the Line 6 emulators .. its lush and
gives you up and down ramp with settable speeds.
check out all the other features it has .. mix between
effect and direct levels, 4 different types of emulation. distortion .. which I don't use .. ramp
and balance between low and high rotation. |

I've had:
The Korg G4 (Good to Great)
The H&K (also Good to Great)
The Boss RT20 (Great to Excellent)
A real Leslie (Only the Rt20 sounds close)
I Still have the Leslie. I use the RT20 when the Leslie isn't practical.
Just 1 more opinion.

Do you want your steel to sound like it's going through a Leslie?
Or do you want it to sound like an organ and a Leslie?
There is a difference. _________________ Artie McEwan |

I used a PE-JR for a few years, and it did the job in the clubs. Pretty good. I still have it....al:) _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

I had a Lesie 16 for years, and sold it after I got a Korg G4 - to me, it's the only one that actually sounds like a Leslie; the others have good chorus effects that sound similar, but not the same. "Rampng" is also a big part of the Leslie sound - the ability to speed up gradually and slow down more quickly. The G4 does it very well. The RT20 also does a decent job.
The advantage to the G4 for me is that I can get more of a Leslie 16 or Vibratone-type sound as opposed to only the organ-type speaker/horn Lesie setup. The RT does a nearly identical job as the G4 in duplicating hte organ-cab tone, but I couldn't tweak the highs out of it and get a more "guitar amp" - like tone similar tothe Leslie16/Vibratone crossover, ehre the mids are wet and the highs/lows sent to the guitar amp speakers. That's sound I want to duplicate , and the RT20 is limited in that area IMO.
FWIW if you want a one-speed Leslie sound the cheap Arion SCH-1 Stereo Chorus (discontinued - and the current SCZ-1 doesn't sound close) does a great job.
And avoid the Danelectro Rocky Road like the plague - it's the most horrid-sounding pedal I've ever heard. There's a mod that improves it - moves it up to "very bad". _________________ No chops, but great tone

Try the Electro Harmonix POG - its a dead ringer for a B-3. I was playing with one at the music store I work at and people were coming up to me and sticking their head around the corner trying to find out who was playing the organ with me.
Worth a shot for you gearheads.
I will be playing with one at the SCSGA steel jam on Dec. 1st at Sam Ash in Cerritos. _________________ President - Southern Californa Steel Guitar Association

I think the Dynacord CLS-222 is the best leslie sim available. Hard to find, though. Craigs List and eBay would be your best bet. |

Over the years I have used several different units that had an organ or Leslie sound. Only me and maybe someone else in the band would know whether it was any good or not. To the folks in the audience, they thought it was just great and how amazing it was I could make my steel sound JUST like and organ.
Right now I have one in my Lexicon MX 200 that isn't too bad with a little tone tweeking.
Just my thoughts on the subject. Thanks. _________________ Keep pickin', Larry |

I have a Boss Rt-20 and it works pretty good. Doesn't make you sound like a B-3 though. I don't think any of the rotary simulators I have heard (a lot of them) actually make you sound like an organ. Keep this in mind. When I want to sound like a B-3, I take a synthesizer to the gig.
The RT-20 works best in stereo. I have 2 NV400's and I patch in through the Pre-EQ patch on the front of the amps (also do that if using 1 amp in mono). _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
