HANK THOMPSON, 82, died this date of progressive lung cancer, in his home town of Keller, Texas, just outside of Fort Worth, TX. He was surrounded by family and friends.
His band was famous for decades and he had many hits in the top ten.
He will be missed....... |

| This is sad news for certain. Hank was one of my all time favorites. I just picked up a compilation CD a couple of weeks ago. In his heyday he had as good a swing band as there ever was. Got to back him up a couple of times and even though his guitar picking was a little rough, I still felt honored to be on stage with him. The last time I saw him he hung out and talked with the band for a good half hour or so and shared some good stories about Curly Chalker, Bob White, and Merle Travis, and others. RIP Mr. Thompson. |

Hank Thompson influenced me and I didn't even
recognize him at the time . it was around 1960 , I
was standing by the guitar section in a Sears
store in Lancaster CA. looking at "F"
hole guitars , when there was a tap on my shoulder ,
I turned , and this fellow said " you don't wont to get
one like that ! you want one with a round hole " and walked
away . This fellow looked like he knew what he was talking
about , so I bought the Silvertone round hole guitar .
It was when I got home that it dawned on me who this
fellow was . Hank Thompson him self .

Not too many artists write lyrics like this, these days. Only ones I can think of are Junior Brown and Cornell Hurd (The self-proclaimed "David Letterman of Country Music").

This is really a sad day for me. The last time I felt this depressed was when we lost Chet Atkins and someone stole my Chet Atkins record collection all in the same month.
I was just reminiscing the other day how great it would be to go to a concert and hear Hank Thompson singing and Merle Travis picking that guitar… I’m pretty sure I have every record and CD of both… or go to the theater and see a brand new John Wayne movie… and I’m sure I have all those too.... or to hear my father Bishop Dwight Moody play Steel and give a lecture...I have a complete library of his sermons.
They had all gone on except for Hank and now he’s gone.
These five great people were for the most part of my childhood my whole life and I can’t imagine what life would have been without them.

Grew up listening to this GREAT artist,He was the ONE with the great band that turned me on to Western Swing when I was a kid,not Bob Wills or Spade Cooley[even tho they were great also]Seem all my main hero's when I was a kid was named HANK,Hank Thompson,Hank Snow,Hank Sr.,Hank Locklin,and some of you may remember Hank Penny,Hank Thompson signed with Capitol records in 1947,had a hit with Humpty Dumpty Heart,that led to a long and great career,don't you know.

| Many have a personal experience with Hank most getting to back him up. Mine is quite different as I was flying back to my home at that time Grand Island, Ne. when the weather was getting worse. I was following a 310 Cessna and as we were parking I noticed it had HT on the tale and the name Hank Thompson. Since I grew up watching him in Okla. I knew who he was. I introduced myself to him and ask if I could be of any assistance since it was obvious he was going to be weatherd in. I loaned him a car and directed him to a nice motel next to my office. He was so thankful for what I did. This was in the 70's and at that time he lived in Okla. on Lake Keystone and had his own private air strip. I also recall going by his home on May Ave in Okla. City where he would have his bus parked. It was a very modest home. He was the greatest!! |

wasn't it Hank that did " wild side of life " and Kitty Wells that came back with " honky tonk angels"
i could be wrong ..i was kinda young back then
anyways... it was these 2 songs that made me want to play the steel. the steel just seemed to harmonize with the singers so well

Any one here old enuff to remember those great endings on Hanks songs back in the 50s? Yesterdays Girl ending.What a production.I was fortunate enough to have Bob White show me how he did that.I didn't have pedals at the time to do the endings he did but i had a Fender 1000 shortly after just so i could do Bob Whites big chord endings.
Many of his songs the band would stop on the last word of the song,playing a 4 chord, pause and play a flat 9th then the root chord,Think Benard Young was his drummer then,but not sure. |
