Does anyone - Merle fans in particular - remember a song that was played behind the action in the John Wayne film, "Chisum"? He wasn't seen - just heard.

The date was 1970, and Merle sings a song called (I think) 'Sally'. I've never heard it anywhere but in the film; does anyone know anything more about it?

I recall watching the film when the song jumped out of the speakers; my first reaction was, 'Wow - what a voice!' - it took seconds to figure out who it had to be, and the credits confirmed it.

Is it on an album anywhere?

Hey Roger, I don't know if this will help, but I looked up that movie HERE and found that Merle is credited with singing two songs in that movie: "Turn Me Around" and "Ballad of John Chisum"

I didn't find either of those listed on any records on allmusic.com, but maybe having the song titles will be a step in the right direction. Smile

Thanks!

'Turn Me Around' sounds right - 'Sally' was a prominent lyric, but there was a line I recall that went:

'....and nothing or no-one turn me around (sic!!!)'

Maybe Merle's on the title song, but I don't remember him. Lots of lusty male chorus guys intoning: "Chisum, John Chisum", but no Merle, I don't think.

Anyway - thanks for bumping this up, and for your suggestion. I'm surprised that, given the number of Haggard afficcionados on the Forum, no-one seems to know it.

I get double minus points because I'm also a big fan of The Duke and don't recall if I've ever seen that movie. I've heard of it, but I don't think I've ever watched it.

yes he does sing on it and I watched it with Merle, and and I think he sounds like Glen Cambell on it. Merle agreed.

A 'bump' to the top...

I hadn't seen Randy's post but that was my thought, too - a definite Glen Campbell impersonation on that track!

I'm really surpised - given how well-done the song is - that it doesn't seem to be on any of Haggard's albums.

Any more thoughts from anyone?

Isn't that the film where John says, "Somebody oughta punch you but I'm not gonna do it....."

Merle's performance may only exist on the proverbial soundtrack album.
