I'm under the impression the 7A is meant to be more than just a tone and volume control. Is this correct and if so what is it for? |

As per Goodrich:
"It provides an ideal impedance match between your pickup and any other device: Volume pedal, effect box or amp. It will prevent the many losses that otherwise occur with any pickup used and will improve your sound dramatically." |

Thanks Erv,that sheds a little light on the subject. It seems I heard once that if you use a Hilton pedal you don't use a matchbox. Made me curious as to what they were designed to do if that is the case. I know the Hilton has tone and volume controls but of course they are not readily available for adjustment if ya just wanna tweak it a tad. |

Mike,
I play with a Hilton pedal but still like the Matchbox clipped to the leg of my guitar. I need that tone and volume control close at hand. It really is great when you set up in a new location to be able to do a final "tweak". |

If this is like the one I had it has a very good fuz tone, sounds like a violin using 1 string.

Ernest,
The unit you are talking about is the "Steel Driver". Besides having the Match Box circuit, it has a Fuzz mode. Basically a two-in-one unit. |

A good friend gave me a Goodrich 4A.. w/ tone and volume. Is it the same as the newer ones but w/out the distortion? _________________ Bo Borland

A 4A would not have the on/off switch for the battery like a current model.
It would not have any distortion feature either. That feature was never on a "Match Box", just the "Steel Driver". |

Erv do you know if the Black Box is the same type of thing as the steel driver? I have a steel driver and like what it does to the tone, but would like a little more warmth. Also is the steel driver/ match box a compressor? _________________ GFI D10, Fender Steel King, Hilton Vpedal,BoBro, National D dobro, Marrs RGS |

The Black Box is more akin to the "Match Box" not the "Steel Driver". Neither the Match Box or the Steel Driver is a compressor.
The Steel Driver is a Match Box with an additional distortion (fuzz) circuit built in.
Years ago, where was a unit similiar to the Match Box. It was called the "Li'l Izzy". And for some distortion, there was the "Boss Tone". Both of these units plugged directly in the jack on your guitar.
I do not have any experience with the Black Box but I do believe it has a tube in it and should "warm" up your tone. |

Thanks, I am thinking of getting a black box, but with the Hilton pedal and the steel driver I was worried about being tonally redundant. _________________ GFI D10, Fender Steel King, Hilton Vpedal,BoBro, National D dobro, Marrs RGS |

How are you supposed to set the volume on these drivers? Match the regular output ? While I like the idea of the tone control.. it is only one tone not bass & treble. I need to roll the bass off when i use the bobro simulator. _________________ Bo Borland

The BoBro is a unit made and sold by Bobbe Seymour.
It is not the same as Goodrich's "Match Bro". |

Well, I guess I've just got to ask.
Someone gave me a Hilton Digital Sustain unit (equivalent to the 7A?) It has an On/Off switch, Tone control on top, and another control on the bottom of the unit. Is this just a volume control? Other than Tone and Volume, is there nothing else to adjust? I've never had any instructions on how to adjust or use it.
Thanks for the help.
