Great stuff. Sounds like Pete Drake.
Several months ago, I picked up a pile of old Porter LPs that I didn't have at a flea market. Even though I've listened to him for a long time, some of these records just floored me. Just great, straightahead country music with great stories but no frills or nonsense. I think time will be very kind to Porter's legacy as the genuine article.
I honestly have trouble picturing the Opry without Porter, just the way Roy Acuff left a hole that is very hard to fill. This kind of music shows that he was so, so much more than the guy who launched Dolly Parton.
Thanks for the years of great music, Porter. |

I'm gonna guess Hal Rugg on steel guitar. I can remember those days when I was a teenager and my mom and dad would watch the Porter Wagoner Show in the evening...I didn't play steel at that time but was interested in just the guitar playing that Buck Trent did. Yes those were truly the days. |

Porter was raised just west of my old stomping grounds in Mo. never got to meet him but i remember watching the Porter wagner show with Norma Jean. i tried to watch it every time it was on. Buck Trents [ banjo ] playing left me spell bound i hated banjos till he played like he did. Porter was just a great humble man he will always be missed.

Walter; A fine entry into your many great tunes of the past; but no better tribute to our late & great Porter; no entertainer could have been more humble and sincere than Porter. And, yes, Walter, my first thought of the steel guitar playing in the back ground was no other than our Pete Drake. another performer whom we all miss very much. He was a fabulous asset to any record he helped to become a hit. But thank you , Walter, for giving us Porter's song for this week. May he rest in peace..
