I've had an annoying bump/click/tap when using my LKL, my "E" lower lever for a little while. I had tried to find the cause a couple of times, but just couldn't put my finger on it. My steel, an all pull S10 Marlen, just didn't have the sustain or tone it once had and it was getting to me. While lubing her up, before playing tonight, I noticed that the cross shafts/rods for that knee lever was slipping back to front when activated, then front to back when released. It then tapped into the back apron, hence the noise. I made and installed a shim that would take out the slack between the lever and the rail that holds the cross rods. After lubing her up, and plugging her in, the sustain and tone are back and killer. I can only think that the rod against the back apron was the problem, killing sustain and tone. Wondering if anyone else has had the same or similar problem. DS |

I can't really comment on the sustain thing and I am not at all familiar with the Marlen undercarriage but on occasions when I find that a pedal or lever moverment causes the cross shaft to move toward one apron or the other, one of the first things I do is loosen the rod puller (bellcrank) and adjust it so that when you move the lever there is no lateral pull on the cross shaft. Yes, a shim/bushing at the rail is a good idea to take out excess play too. But there is energy being wasted in the form of friction (and it a is defying the truism about the shortest distance....straight line...etc.etc.) if the lever pull translates to both linear rod movement and biased or lateral movement. |

Thanks Jon,
Appreciate the reply. I didn't notice a lateral pull component, but I'll have another look at it. I'm thinking that because I'm so short, 5'4", that with any play in the shaft front to back, I may have been pulling slightly on the KL with a front to back motion and not realizing it. I did tighten the KL on my knee some, just incase I was doing that. Your right about the friction and I did leave a slight bit of play. Again, thanks for the input. DS |
