Seems I rarely use pedal 4 or 8. Thinking about maybe converting pedal 4 into a Franklin pedal. Don't know about pedal 8 yet. Anybody have any ideas, sugguestions, or warnings? |

Hi Fred, depends on your copedant. As you know some universals vary to a certain degree. My 4th pedal is the Boowah....if you look at Danny Nacaratto's tuning at the section on Universal E9th/B6th tunings, Mine is similar to his. He only has 6 pedals, but 6 knee levers. I have 7 and 5 on my guitar. Pedals 4,5,6, are same as his, and I use them all. On my 7th pedal I raise my 7th string to G, or sometimes G# for some unison things on open tunings or when E's are lowered.

Holy moly, that's an old page. I need to change it AND the pics.... I've changed my knee levers since then. Pedals still the same though. I will try to update that thing and send it to b0b. I'll also try to update my knees on here also......

I've dropped to 7 pedals, and put the standard 6th pedal 7 change on a inner LKL... I've met a couple of other steelers putting the 7 pedal on a KL... I like it because it facilitates using this change with any other pedal combo. |

My pedal 4 raises string 9 B to C, lowers string 11 E to Eb, and lowers string 12 B to G#. PEdal 8 raises string10 G# to A, and string 11 E to F#. Pedals 5,6,7 are standard, and those are the ones I really use a lot. Thanks for the replies! |

Hi Fred.
Your pedal 4 is the "boo-wah" pedal, typically found on C6th pedal 8. Jazz players love this pedal, and some of them have moved it to P4 for convenience.
Your pedal 8 is unusual - it's not a standard change. It's designed for thumb style picking, ala Bobbe Seymour. It turns the low strings into a B7th chord. Think of it as C7th at the first fret. Your low strings at the first fret, with E's lowered and your P8, are C G Bb C E G. This makes it possible to play the alternating bass with your thumb, as Chet Atkins or Merle Travis would do.
Now, release the pedal and lever. At the first fret you have: C F A C F (G) A C - an F major chord with alternating bass notes on the 11th and 12th strings. You now have thumb-style positions for I and V7 (or I7 and V) on your right foot. Your left foot can work the E9th pedals to get the melody notes.
I have a hard time thinking of anything to do with those pedals that is better than what you have now. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
