What is the best method to remove the cross shaft on Emmons guitars, and what tool or tools are needed? I'm grateful for any response to this question. |

When you do remove the shaft, get ready to catch the little spring that is compressed at the end of the shaft. |

On the rear apron there is a small block that the cross shaft fits in. There are 2 screws holding that block to the apron. Remove those screws, then you can pull the shaft up and out of the hole in the front apron. As mentioned, there is a spring that will pop out of the front holes.
Of course I am assuming that you have already removed any push or pull rods going through the bell cranks on the particular shaft that you are removing. |

On a Le Grande, I've done this. Push the rod all the way to one side, so that the little spring loaded pin is exposed as much as possible. Score the pin with a cutting wheel on a Dremel tool. Now you can grab the pin, where you have scored it, with a small jewellers screwdriver, and push it into the cross shaft, allowing the cross shaft to be released from the hole in the apron. It's a pain...Jerry |

You can use a waffer wheel but be sure and have another pin availiable. This is actually a design
flaw to me, and could have been changed to make changes easier for players, which results in more sales. |

There is really not much need to remove the cross shafts on a LeGrande. The bellcranks can be removed and reinstalled without removing the cross shafts.
This is not the case with the p/p's, however. |

One reason would be to acsess the screws directly under the shaft for the key head to remove it and clean under it, and the key head itself. An offset screw driver will not work. |
