Anyone know who he is? I just got a copy of Taj Mahal's CD Sacred Island and that is the name of the steeler on it. Very bluesy with a Hawaiian feel but still very much a Taj CD. |

FRED LUNT took part in a steel guitar concert at Kapiolani Park back in 1990 as I recall. Fine steel player. |

You are correct Keoki. I was there and enjoyed his playing.
This occasion was the May Day Celebration sponsored by HSGA in Kapiolani Park. He was one steel guitarist among many who participated on the program to feature steel guitar. Alan Akaka played.Bobby Ingano played, I followed Bobby (now that's unfair) and you probably played also George, right?
Here is a sample of Fred Lunt

No offense, but are you sure that sound clip is the guy you guys are talking about? He's barely keeping up with the changes. |

That is Fred Lunt on the steel, but not playing the type of songs he's used to.
This one here, written by Vic Rittenband's wife, Nancy, which most of their songs have a real Hapa Haole tourist sound to it. The song is called "Have A Happy Day".
To hear Fred in his real form, you'd have to get his CD's from his group, Na Pali.
Fred is also featured on Greg Sardinha's Hawaiian Steel Volume 1 CD in which he plays "Lei No Kaiulani".
Fred was the best man in the wedding for the great David "Feet" Rogers, one of Hawaii's greatest steel players.
Fred is also shown in a documentary DVD film by Eddie Kamae about the Sons of Hawaii. |

Yah Don, I played backup r/guitar, also steel...a lot of steel players showed up that day for the program which Mary and I organized...(I also did the emcee work). I spent many hours of valued vacation time phoning every steel player I could, asking them to come to the bash...a lot did, however many had hung up their steels years ago. In the end, it turned out to be well worth the effort. |
