I listen a lot at the get togethers about the steel players who are recording cd's, formulating teaching materials, and selling their products at our jamborees and shows. This type action is mostly a steeler to steeler function with no outsiders or the general public involved. Several conversations have evolved with reference to what would happen to the popularity of the instrument if there were some method by which we could include the general public.

Discussion of a contract between a major record company and the individual playing the instrument always raises eyebrows and brings forth pessimistic opinions mostly with a "that'll never happen" attitude being expressed. Well those folks are out of school with that outlook now. I just got an email from Bobbe Seymour tonight and he's agreed to let me share some of it with forumites. Here's a portion of the email:

"I just signed a great record contract with SUN records, (The old rockabilly/ Presley/Johnny Cash company) they are taking almost all my CDs, along with the satellite downloads, for distribution, promotion, and sales. The president of the label, Shelby Singleton and I spent 3 hours hammering out the agreement this morning."

I can tell from the the tone of the email that Bobbe is really excited over this deal and I think it's gonna' be fun for both sides of the relationship. I guess now we'll see if the general public will pick up on the steel guitar as they have with other instruments marketed by a major company with nation and even world wide distribution and promotion systems in place.

Way to go Sizemore. Now if we can just teach you where the dang master switch is on that Piper----------- Laughing

I'm happy for Bobbe. Hopefully, someday, there will be a PSG spot on the major record store racks. I bought a CD of Lloyd's at a major book store and a copy of Buck Owens In London just so I could listen to Jay Dee Maness on my CD player in my car and on my ipod. Today, in some stores you can listen to sound bites of their CDs. IMO, when the psg gets to be known by more people the market will expand. IMO the capabilities of the psg, or applications in other styles besides country will help. It seems to me that the complexity of the psg will attract more musicians as it's popularity grows.

Congratulation Bobbe! This is great because it will help to get the public more atuned to the steel guitar.

I think if anyone in our steel world can help to turn a few ears and get more interested in the steel guitar, it will be our Bobbe.

Here's a little history for you all, I remember buying my first steel guitar L.P. in the early to mid 1970s at a small local Wal-Mart store. There were no Super Centers in those days. I just happened to be flipping through the Country record section, and low and behold it was there....

It was "Lloyd Green's "Shades of Steel," L.P. and you know I bought it for a whole $3.99; well that changed my life for ever. And yes, I still have that same L.P. also I found a new unopened copy a few years back.

Unfortunately, this L.P. of Lloyd's has never been released on CD yet. Lloyd told me several years back that the Japanese corporations when they took over several USA record labels, they acquired the rights to that L.P. and one or two others of his. Crying or Very sad However, there will certainly come a day when it will be re-released on CD.

Again, great news for Bobbe and the Steel World!

GOD bless!

Here's some more of Bobbe's email. Maybe it will explain better, than I explained, what it probably means:

"This should be a good step forward for steel guitar in general as it isn't just E9th licks but rather just good music played on steel guitar, with the worlds finest musicians doing the back up. With great musicians, arrangements and such, the steel should at least have a fighting chance to be heard and loved by all.

After all, remember the "Pan Flute"? Zamfir sold millions with this ridiculous instrument.

Steel being able to be heard and presented in a non-hillbilly/Hawaiian way, the way other musical instruments have been presented, should open thousands of minds the world over. I'm just glad to be a part of it."

Does that help any? And Joe C., he's selling not buying this time. Laughing Laughing

Congratulations, Bobbe. I tried to get that contract for myself, but they told me I was too old -- so I referred them to you.Wink

In all seriousness, I hope you sell millions. Wow! What a boost that should give the steel guitar in terms of exposure and image. Very Happy Very Happy
