Kay's Kwiz for the Kollege of Kool Steel Guitarists was run in Joliet last weekend. You may now test your skills on line.
You will need to access the following url and download the 15 mp3 clips:
http://idisk.mac.com/kaydas-Public
You need to identify the steel guitarists in each of these clips which range from 20 secs to about a minute each. You do not need to identify the tune. You may reply here or by e-mail. Be careful to enter your answers in the following sequence (for some reason the software places track10Kwiz before track01Kwiz).
track01Kwiz:
track02Kwiz:
track03Kwiz:
track04Kwiz:
track05Kwiz:
track06Kwiz:
track07Kwiz:
track08Kwiz:
track09Kwiz:
track10Kwiz:
track11Kwiz:
track12Kwiz:
track13Kwiz:
track14Kwiz:
track15Kwiz:
To make life a little simpler, I have listed some steel guitarists here in alphabetical order, 15 of whom feature in the clips:
Jules Ah See, Alan Akaka, Jeff Au Hoy, Junior Brown, Jerry Byrd, Kay Das, Herb Hanawahine, Sol Hoopii, Bobby Ingano, Andy Iona, Barney Isaacs, Greg Leisz, Dick McIntyre, Buddy Merrill, M.K. Moke, Casey Olsen, Roland Peachy, Greg Sardinha, Mike Scott, Warren Slavin, Roy Smeck, Ian Ufton, Don Woods, Leonard Zinn.
Have fun!

C'mon guys, nearly 200 of you have read the quiz but only a couple so far have sent me your answers. This leads me to believe that:
(a) the quiz is so easy that you are all rolling over clutching your bellies and laughing at how simple the quiz is....
(b) the quiz is so tough that you are scratching your heads, pulling your hair ( if any) at the roots, and crying out loud at the injustice of the quiz and life in general....
(c) you heard so much steel guitar recently that the thought of listening to more steel guitar drives you up the wall....
(d) HSGA/SGF does not pay you enough to warrant your time....
This is an appeal to steel guitarists, practising and armchair. Making this quiz go on-line took time and money. Make something even if it is only a mistake!
May I have the pleasure of at least twenty responses.....or perhaps five... or even three ... |

One out of 15 for me, track 15. Knew most of the players, could not match them up, liked no 13 a lot ,very dry understated. Looking forward to finding out who that is |

9 out of 15 for me.
Is this good or bad?
Shouldn't I be doing something about global warming and ending the war instead of tatooing these sounds on my brain. _________________ Gerald Ross

gerald,
some others did not quite match you so 9/15 is good. i had no way of pre-judging how difficult (or easy) the quiz was...but it sure was fun focusing on the different techniques and touches of the different artistes...i sure learnt something and i hope that applies to all...
kevin,
number 13 was one of my personal favorites too..a bit different from the others. i will e-mail you the answers tonight
bill,
thanks, answers to you tonight...
don,
i do not know what the problem may be. check if your i-tunes can read mp3 files, i thought it was the default. did you press the small button (download) on the extreme right? maybe someone more knowledgeable then i can come to don's rescue...
any others,
i will close-out at the weekend...so hurry and make your guesses...

The song choices really show off the diversity in style and tone from the various artists. I only wish that you could have posted the entire songs rather than the 1:00 clips. What a great collection of songs! I would love to see the list of artists and song titles if possible. |

1. Can anyone offer any suggestions to help Nick?
2. Mitch, unfortunately, I cannot post entire tunes as doing so will violate some copyrights. Some tracks do not have this, and I will be happy to send them to you by e-mail or snail mail. I will post the correct list and, per your request, the names of tunes this weekend.. when the quiz closes.

I had a hard time trying to listen to them. My Windows Media Player breaks up on most of the tunes. Maybe it's the link, I'm not too great with the PC. |

Whoa!
We have our first 100% correct answer, congratulations to Bobby Lee!
For those still sending in their answers, keep 'em coming, will publish the results Saturday late night after my gig....if the fires in Southern California do not arrive first. In any event, I have my steel guitars packed by the door...Just kidding...
Have fun participating, anyway! |

Aloha Kay,
Very Exciting -- I surprised myself -- 12 out of 15.
I missed Greg Leisz, Roy Smeck and Don Woods.
Are you going to post all who replied?

I was not able to complete the quiz on time, due to time needed to negotiate and buy a house. That is done now.
Kay, I found this was a difficult quiz. I went through it hurriedly and got only seven correct. I even missed me. After you identified everyone on the quiz, I went back to listen to #12. Then I finally recognized my own playing. I guess that I have not heard myself play enough to recognize it. This may be a serious problem. Maybe I need some help!!
We need an explanation from Bobby Lee. How was he able to get everyone correct? Did he have the answers beforehand?
Aloha,
Don |

I only know who 5 of them are, beyond having heard their names. I am woefully undereducated about Hawaiian style players. The only ones I could pick out were Greg Leisz, who I love to hear, and I thought one of them was Gary Brandin... |

As far as I know, of the people that corresponded with me with their answers, the top two are:
Jeff Au Hoy (13)
Warren Slavin (12)
The contestants at Joliet bear mention, although their scores were lower. However, they had it tougher as I did not provide them the pool of names to choose from.
Don,
One of the (unwritten) rules of the game was that anyone who could not recognize his own playing got a negative point !!!
Thanks for participating, anyway. The person that appeared to have got it all correct disclaimed it...so as far as I know, no one did!
Keith,
Believe it or not, you are the only one that got Greg Leisz correct!
