I was wondering if anyone knows what Ralph Mooney's pre-knee lever 8-string copedent was.
In other words, I'm assuming that there was a period of time during which Ralph used an 8-string Fender that had no knee levers.
What was his copedent for this? I am guessing that this was late 50's throughout 60's and into early 70s that he would have had such a setup, but not sure when he actually added his first knee lever.
Thanks for your help. |

Or, in the alternative, does anyone know where I could look to find the answer? About the only resource I have available is the Internet and I've searched, but have not been able to find the answer. Thanks. |

I found this from a 1968 Tom Bradshaw PSG newsletter.
I'm not sure how accurate it is. I always heard that the G# to A pulls were on seperate pedals and he had the E to F# on a fourth pedal by itself that he used with the right foot, and a change that lowered the high G# to G.
I'm thinking it was closer to this tuning minus the last two strings, knee levers and only pedals 2 through 7.

Winnie Winston's book showed Mooney's tuning as ten strings, as does Tom Bradshaw's 1980 interview in Steel Guitarist magazine:

G# +A -G
E +F# +F
B +C#

Interestingly, Tom's chart has all 5 pedals in reverse order from Winnie's. Maybe he was looking at the guitar upside down. Tom does that a lot. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
