I've got a gig coming up and need a good solo for Willing. Anyone have on worked up already?

Great tune, classic..
I have always stayed close to the Ronstadt version for both Guitar and Steel. Learned it 30 years ago, it still works in all instances. Got a chance to play it two ore three times a few months back...Got an incredible rise from the Band leader..

he said after the song..

"How did you do that ? "

I said..

"I dunno, ask Sneaky Pete"

thats my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Yes! Try stealing some licks from this video of the song (a live version by Craig Fuller):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2L8bVPtz4E

It's pretty easy. Most the action is in just 3 frets. I don't have tab, but here's a road map. Key of G.

First Half of the Solo:
* It's all in the 10th fret, pedals-down position.

* Except you briefly slide to 8th fret, no pedals, both times the tune goes to the C chord (You can see the steeler's bar hand do all these fret-moves in the video).

Second Half of the Solo:
* Up to the 15th fret, no pedals. Then add B-pedal lick. Then A-pedal lick.

* 10th fret, pedals-down(for one beat, on the way down to the C chord) Land on the 8th fret for the C chord

* 10th fret, pedals-down on the G chord. End with harmonics in 10th fret. Slide up one fret while it's ringing then back to 10th fret... watch the video.

I love Sneaky Pete Kleinow's solo on "Willin'" from Little Feat's 1972 album "Sailin' Shoes";
very beautiful and very unconventional.

Listen to this clip: Willin' Solo mp3

and check out this tab:

Enjoy!

Tim!

Thanks. I was just revisiting this great album, and thinking how I'd love to learn this solo.

If my memory serves me, a few years ago Drew Howard posted a clip of that song with some very, very beautiful steel.

Richie Hayward
Man, could he drum.
At the basketball games at half time, he would play drum solos for 10 minutes straight.
Amazing.

Bob,

Richie is my favorite rock'n'roll drummer. As you say, amazing! And he continues to be with Little Feat.

Speaking of his Iowa roots: In 2004, Mr Hayward was inducted into the Iowa Rock'n'Roll Music Hall of Fame.

Keep on rockin'...er' Pickin'!

Hey Glenn
Thanks for that update.
Really brings back a lot of memories!
I imagine old Richie could tell us quite a few stories.

Yeah, 2007 - long stretch between posts.

And while the thread was lying dormant, Richie Hayward left us 5 1/2 years ago.
