Help! I've got a new Quarterman cone that has slightly too great a circumference for the hole in the guitar. I'm a klutz, and I don't want to ruin the nice new cone. What's the best way to trim it? I did some searches, here and other places, and I haven't found anything. |

I usually use a table mounted belt sander and a fine grit belt.
You could use some 120 grit paper lightly by hand. While rotating the cone, lightly sand the edge as you move around the outside radius. Check fit often. It should have some clearance (but not sloppy).

Say Gary, how did your cone sizing turn out? I just did one on a Chinese squareneck following Gregg's hand-sanding tip, and it worked great.
I tried to remove equal amounts while rotating the cone followed by steel wool to remove the burrs each time. I spent about an hour doing this, checking fit periodically, until the cone fit with a little clearance.
It took about 3 hours, including the sizing, to install the Q cone, bone nut and even out the spider and it was well worth the time spent.
Be posting more about this later, but just wanted to say Thanks to Gregg and inquire as to your results. |
