He's simply amazing. Check out Nightlife, Swinging Doors on his MySpace page. Also, if you ever get the chance to get a copy of Gary Stewart's Live at Billy Bob's CD, his and the late Donnie McDuff's arrangements are unreal.

Well my paypal account is $17 dollars lighter, had to buy the disc.

I like the freedom and lack of pedal stomp cliche in his playing.

I've never met Steve or heard him play live but I have heard that he's a players player. By the sound of this stuff I'd have to agree. I gotta have the CD!

I don't know which guitar and amp Steve uses, but his tone is very crisp and clear on "Night Life."
"Tone To Die For." Very Happy

Steve has been one of my top 6 favorite steel players for the past 8 years. People would look at me whenever I mentioned his name wondering who he is but he will match anyone on either neck.

I've always said a show with Mike Smith, Mike Johnson, Buck Reid, Steve Palousek, Tommy White, Randy Beavers, and Paul Franklin would be my dream steel show. Well, I can dream can't I? HA HA

I've been fortunate enough to watch Steve "come up" from a youngster in the TSGA from about 25 years ago to a mature, articulate, talented, world class steel player,,,and one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. I remember when Charlie Norris would introduce him at the shows,,,and fumble around with his name,,,,He knows it now!!!! Another great talent from back then (and a guy that "guested" on the CD) is Willie Kalusa,,,,a monster player!!

This ia a perfect example of why I do not like warm tone. Steve's tone here is clear, defined, nice edge, with still a little body in it. Great string separation. The exact sound that I like.

Great CD..as is the Billy Bobs CD which I feel is a reference for bandstand approach, tone, delay and just plain great playing on great songs ! Also,if you really like this new CD from Steve you may also want to grab Buck Ried's new offering , these two along with Randy Beavers new offering I believe have really raised the bar.

Listening to Steve playing on I'll Fly away is exhausting...when it's over I need a rest !

I know, I merged two others into one conversation, but I was gonna do a short thread on all 3 anyway...

sorry..

A couple guys wanted to know what Steve plays -- an Emmons Legrande III through a Nashvillee 400. Steve gets a killer for tone out of his Emmons!

Here's a picture from the TX Opry Show a couple years ago when Steve was playing with Ray Price.

Albert Talley (tuning his Zum) and I (electric guitar)were part of the house band. What a show! By the way, Ray Price was outstanding that night too.

This is the night Steve reached from behind the back curtain and flipped my Fender amp to standby just before I was to play a turnaround!! Took about 3-4 minutes of wiggling cords...tapping my amp...and a near heart attack to realize Steve goofed with my amp.

Bill Simmons - that's amazing.

You just picked my favourite half-dozen pedal-steel players. I knew someone would agree with me...

My favorited tune by Steve is "Shadow Of Your Smile" on a previous project on cassette. Incredible talent with a magic touch. This CD is also awesome.

The one and only time I ever saw Steve was somewhere around 10-15 years ago at a Steel Guitar show in Dallas and he was playing some of the best E9th and C6th I had ever heard.

Good stuff...not surprised though. I'm a big fan and have most of his music. A wonderful talent, great tone and a great inspiration. Always wondered why his name rarely came up on the forum, unless of course I just missed it, oops.

Here's another pic of Steve at the TX Opry...doesn't he look shy?? HA HA. Steve uses a number of effect boxes but not a rack system that night. By the way, not only is he one of the best steel players, but he plays a mean electric guitar!! (come to think about it, maybe that's why he reached through the curtain while I was playing and hit my standby switch -- my electric guitar playing was probably making him ill!!)

Roger...if I was a rich guy I'd hire those great steel players for a show and fly you in!! HA Glad you agree about those great players coming together.

Tony...I sure remember you coming by the Rains Steel Booth...had a good laugh with you guys...wish we had more time to visit -- maybe in Dallas! Bill Simmons
