Three catagories seem obvious to me 1. The players
2. The builders, especially the pioneers 3. The
promoters and friends of the steel community.
The third catagory, of course would be the hardest,
since potential candidates might not be universally known. People like Mike Gross and Eddie Stubbs, whose regular showcasing of steel guitar music is
legendary amongst their listeners. People like
Leonard Stadler, who falls in the builder catagory, but was just as well known for his friendship to
players and involvement in the promotion end as well.
Just my thoughts. |

Danny, bet you get a lot of opines on this one, but the facts are that to get someone nominated and then inducted into 'the current HOF' you gotta' comply with this:

What about the chance of person living outside USA getting in to HOF??
In Sweden we have Janne Lindgren, life long promotor of the PSG. Wellknown musician here in europe! Also have imported and sold hundreds of steel guitars from USA.
And what about Basil? From England!! He is so great and have given his life to this wonderful instrument.
I´ll give a vote for this two gentlemen!

What could they have besides something comparable to the current standards? In a nutshell, they want to know the candidate's
1. Name
2. Impact as a touring steel guitar player.
3. Overall influence on other steel guitar players.
4. Impact as a recording steel guitar player.
5. Impact as a steel guitar teacher, mentor, or writer of instructional materials.
6. Impact as an designer, innovator, or manufacturer of steel guitars.
7. Impact as a person advancing the steel guitar in other ways.
In other words - what was the overall impact of this person on steel guitar music, other steel guitar players, and the instrument itself? Every honorary society comparable to this I have seen uses comparable standards to decide who should be inducted, from academic to professional to sports to you-name-it.
The only other option I can imagine would be a "People's Choice" type of award. Totally different concept, and maybe someone should start something like that, as a parallel thread. But the current standards for the SGHOF make total sense to me.
I really think the differences in opinion about who should be inducted come mainly from differences in perception about what attributes of contribution are "good" or "important". No matter what standards are used, that will always be an issue.
The other point is that the fact someone isn't in there yet doesn't mean they aren't worthy or won't be inducted. They only induct two per year. |

The reason I started this thread was I asked 4 different people about what they thought the criteria for getting in should be and I got 3 different answers.
One friend said it should be you have to be a great player only , another said it should be how much you've contribited to the advancement of the instrument only. Another friend said it should be who you've played with only.
This thread is not meant to make anyone mad or start an argument.
I'm only interested in everyones personal opinion.
