Also looks like a very young Chris Hillman, too!
In '72 I went to see them twice. Couldn't get enough of that steel.
Seemed like Hillman and Perkins really made that band gel. _________________ Forget "world peace". Visualize using your turn signals. |

Hmm, my browser is playing up.. sometimes I have trouble with youtube and myspace, although I often suspect that US maintainence downtime is when us folks on the other side of the world are trying to access everything.
If they're the clips I think they are, then they've most likely sourced from a DVD taken from a German live concert broadcast from 1972. |

that was cool. in the second video when Stills goes "Let's hear some pickin Al" does it look to you guys like Al didnt realize it was his time for a solo? Al just sorta plays a wee fill at first while Stills seems to be looking at him and gesturing "come on! GO!"...then at the end Al kinda plays a louder more solo like fill and Stills has this look like "NOW you solo?!" |

Ben,
That solo sounded more to me like Al was trying to stay out of the way of that keyboard!

From memory on the record , the piano takes the first solo then the steel , so either Stills goofed or the piano and steel were asleep ! I love this tune , thats why I posted it

Yeah, after Stills said "pick one for us Al", the piano just plays right over it. As Stills moves out of the way, you can see Al looking over to the piano.
I dunno, but where I'm from - regardless of what was on the record - if the singer/leader gives an clearly audible "pick one for us Doc" (what most of these young fellers I play with call me) over the mic and the guitar or keyboard player takes it instead - that is, by definition, the other guy's mistake. Unless, of course, the other guy goes by Doc.
Really nice stuff. That was a kick a$$ band. |

Yeah Stills was really at the pointy end of the country rock thing with Buffalo Springfield morphing into CSNY ,Manassas , Poco , Eagles etc.Al Perkins really turned me on to the "pedal" sound of the steel guitar . |

If you can latch onto one of the Netherlands tapes of "Hide It So Deep" you hear Stills calling for Chris Hillman to take a mandolin solo and Paul Harris jumps him on piano. Then Stills calls for Al to take the back half of the break and Perkins does this unbelievable job.
Sounds like Mr. Harris, though a fine player in his own right, needed to get with Stills on when and where he should come in. |

Those Youtube videos were copped from a commercial DVD. Not a very cool thing. It's a 9-song "live in the studio" Radio Bremen release - I found it at Borders about 6 months ago. I think it was $12.99 - cheap and worth having in my collection.
It's very strange, because it is almost like a rehearsal - no real "stage presence", no announcing the songs, players...not like a concert or show of any kind. It almost seems as if they were maybe doing a recording for a radio broadcast, and knew all the introductions, announcing, transitions etc.would be recorded later - and that the "video" part was just an afterthought, or maybe something so the band could see how they looked and make some changes to the stage setup.
It's really weird. Fun, but weird. And also REALLY sloppy. Those videos were highlights - there's some pretty weak stuff and "minor second" harmonies on some of the others...

I saw Manassas in 1972. It was one of the best concerts I have seen. I have the DVD too and it is worth getting.
