I feel like I've seen this question addressed before, but I'm unable to find anything in the archives.
I'm curious if anyone has any recordings of this tuning in various settings, ie - country, jazz, rock or anything in between.
Seems like it might be a great way to break out of some old habits and play something different for a change!
Thanks...... |

Henry,,,I know Graham Griffith uses it and posted some extensive info about it in the past. Also Zane King uses it and stated when he joined the forum that he would be posting but as yet I've not seen anything. I think Blake Fourgarousse (?) still uses it. I wish we could explore it in depth more. I think it is the same basic tuning that Tom Morrell used on his non-pedal tuning,,,except with pedals,,,E9 with added 6th,,,minimal changes,,,I think 4 pedals and 5 knees. Dan Burnham may be using it and can shed more light. |

Dan Burnham does use Zane's tuning and has studied its capabilities a bunch. I think there is alot that can be done with it.
I play a 14 string BMI that Zane and Don Fritsche made for me back in 1984. However, I use something similiar to Julian Tharpe's because I first heard Julian play and then went to Zane to have him build me a steel like Julian's.
Zane was a great person and super player! I miss him and Julian alot.

I have one of my guitars(2007 BMI S12) set up with the ZB E13 tuning.
The other is standard E9. I have been playing the ZB tuning for a few months now, slowly getting used to it. It has a lot of capabilities that I am yet to master, so far I'm pretty much doing E9 stuff on there, but trying to explore all the other possibilities slowly.

I wish I'd have learned the ZB splits. . .his version of the Emmons/Day splits. They really wind up giving you stuff that's hard to get with the Nashville E9th splits. Yet you can still get all the same results as you would with Nashville splits. (Did that make any sense?). Zane described his tuning to me once as 'hovering between both tunings', meaning the E9 and C6, making either accessible right there and then. It is a brilliantly-conceived setup. But then Zane was a brilliant guy.

Paul, your right on! Zane Beck was a brillant guy and many never knew it. He was a person that remained humble and was always wiling to help anyone.
His tuning was like that somewhere between the E9th and C6th tuning and so was Julian THarpes. Julian referred to his as a E-9th with and added 6th.
When a person listens to their L.P. recording titled "14 + 12 = Country Jazz," it is at times difficult to differeniate between who is playing what and where with Julian and Zane Beck.

Thanks for the compliment Jack. Yes I play Zane's tuning and have been for 28 years. Zane moved from Scranton,AR.to Little Rock when I was 17 years old.
I had been playing a BMI s10 for 2 years. Zane and my dad decided I should switch to a s12 with Zane's tuning. So Xmas time I got my new steel and had to sell my s10. There is a whole other story about that s10 I will share later with you. I took lessons from Zane. I sat in with him at some of his gigs also. I wish I had spent more time with Zane, but I was too interested in girls and race cars at that time. After a month or so I was able to adapted to the string and pedal set up quiet easily. Also I found it easy to transpose training material from Jeff Newman and others to Zane's tuning.Over the years I have added an additional pedal and changed a knee lever pull. I am also thinking of adding a sixth pedal so to have the "Franklin" change. This tuning is very fun and has a very wide range of options from C6th style,E9th commercial style to a mixture of both without having to change necks. The string grouping is the only challenge to overcome when switching from E9th tuning to Zane's tuning.
Zane's tuning string arrangement:
G# F# E C# B G# F# D B G# E B
I can email or post my pedal and lever chart if anyone is interested. I still kick my self for not hanging with Zane and learning more about this tuning. Thanks again, Dan Rollans @Steeler's Choice |

Henry,
I've been on Zane's Tuning for 2 years. I'm working on a Copedant Project regarding Zane's tuning, tablature available, talk tapes etc., I'm having great success of collecting materials regarding Zane's tuning. So far with the help of all the above mentioned, I have Zane King, Randy Terry, and Garland Harris sending me written material that Zane did while working with them. I hope in the next year to put together a collection and eventually write a full course on the tuning. Right now I'm in the process of writing tab for the talk tapes that have been collected so far.
Zane King got a scholarship at Berklee School of Music playing that tuning.
It is an incredible tuning with so much potential. I hope my research will reveal to the steel community what that tuning is possible of. Check our site www.beckmusicalinstruments.com in the coming weeks and months. I will be posting on the site tablature, and information regarding the tuning from those who play it and had experience with Zane Beck.

Thanks Dan (and everyone else). I must confess that I have little patience for tablature. If prefer to learn by ear (trial and error, mostly error!).
Dan, if you have any recordings of different players using that tuning, I'd love to hear them.
What I'd really love is to spend a few days with a guitar with that setup. |

I met Zane in 1968 at tom Bradshaw's first West Coast pedal steel show. We talked and he gave me a copy of his tuning. We were very close to our tunings. He had a E6 on the top few strings with E9 and E7 on the bottom. He played a lot in E13th,D13,E6,A6,D6 , He played some of his pop stuff using a Dmaj7 pedal. This can be done with the Standard E9 tuning too,all on one tuning.
I would probably say he had the closes thing to a Universal tuning with the E9 2 pedals. He was a great talent and a wonderful human being. I think it was easier to learn than B6 on the universal of today.
But now E9/B6 is getting to be pretty standard for S12 universals.
I met Tom.Zane,Noel Boggs,Chuck Wright,Vance Terry , and Maurice Annderson for the 1st time with his s12 Bb6 universal, what another great talent and super nice guy..I am glad I have those wonderful memories...al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.

Henry,
I'm putting together a few songs from different people that play the tuning. It will take me a while to get that done. Right now I'm working on a Chord Book of Zane Beck's tuning, After that I will follow with a tab book of songs done by Zane focusing on his grips, licks he used to move from one chord to another and then last put it all together with a course that will focus on his style of playing. He wasn't really into Country, although he could play anything. Zane King had the guys at Berkley examine the tuning and they said of all the copedants for the instrument, it had the most flexibility and potential of all of them considering how many pedals and knees had to be used to get the most chords and accomplish the most scales within one tuning. Thanks for the replies back guys.

I was looking at the BMI website and was curious about the so-called "powerboost pickup" which is a triple coil or triple tap. What is the story on that? Is it anything like a ZB pickup? What's the string spacing and will it in a standard cavity? |

Michael,
PowerBoost Pickup are built by Mr. Gene Turner from Mayfield Kentucky. The triple coil we are talking about on the site is a clone of the one used on the old ZB that Zane Beck built. Zane sent a blue print of the pickup to Gene before he died. Gene is a perfectionist when it comes to design and building. As a retired machinest, he is very skilled at his work. Gene uses a uniform wind on all his pickups similar to the way Dr. Ron Lashley Sr. used to build his pickups. Gene can tell you exactly how many winds are on the pickup. They are laid in a uniform manner, no hand winding. He then dips them in wax for 2 minutes and then finishes up the covering. They will fit in the standard slot and he will build you what you want. He doesn't do them in production, it's just a hobby. Jerry Fessenden uses these pickups on his own personal guitar. They are not cheap, around $110.00 a pickup. "Cowboy" Eddie Long uses one, Zane King has ordered one, Tom Baker is talking to him about building some for him, and the rest is history. The recording engineer at RCA told Eddie two weeks ago, that it had the best sound he had ever heard.
I like them because of the warmth, bottom, mid, and top. I have one of the triple coils on my guitar, Dan Rollins has one as well.
My little push-pull BMI sounds just like the old ZB's, at least that is my opinion and Zane Kings.
Tommy White is going to have Gene build him one to use in the near future.
I can give you Gene's phone number and you can talk to him or if you want come up to the place and try one out.
Tommy said "Cowboy" Eddie Long's guitar had one of the best sounds he had ever heard. And coming from Tommy, that means a lot.
I love powerboost if you couldn't tell. Just let me know.

Bernard,
Thanks, I've started the Chord Book. Using his last tuning, I can tell you this will be huge. Basically how I'm doing it is using the Clicktab Software. I've put Zane's Copedant in the software. I've started with the Key of C. I'm working in this fashion C Maj., C Min. and so on. To give you an idea how much is involved I just finished all the chord grips which include Floor and Knee Combinations and I just finished doing all the positions for C Maj. 6 and I'm up to 79 pages and I'm not even half-way with finishing the Key of C grips. I'm figuring each key will basically require 200 - 250 pages. My goal is to do a chord book all the way through the chormatic scale. What I have excluded from the book is possible chord positions where you have to hit pedals that skip pedals that are together. For example, I have some grip options that required hitting pedal 1 & 4. I have opt to not include them. It will be an exhaustive volume of all the basic chord possiblities, will total a complete volume of 13 books at an average of 200-250 pages each. Projected time of release will be hopefully next year. I will make the volumes available via PDF. only. The goal is to give the end user playing the tuning the ability let's say he is going from C7 to Amin. to find the closest grip to the C7th chord with the least amount of change.
I just counted C Major chord grips with floor and knee changes and there are 78 grips available for C Major alone in Zane Beck's tuning. I would say this would be an exhaustive study of chords in Zane's tuning to say the least. I'll update you concerning my progress.
Thanks,

Al,
This is a labor of Love, intensive and long-suffering. MY end goal is for anybody who plays the tuning, to be able to pickup a song that has the chords written out. Goto the Reference Set, find the chords and be able to pick which one will meet their needs. I'm in favor of moving to the chord that is the closest to what I want and has the right voicing. At least with this one you will have the option. The other great thing about this, is since there will be no more changes made to the tuning due to Zane's death, the tuning is suspended ever from evolving anymore. I know a lot of guys won't ever consider playing the copedant, but I think you know this copedant offers the most for the least amount of pedals and knees. Besides, Zane Beck was a great guy and I feel like this needs to be done.

Hey Guys & Gals,
I know Dan has been working on this stuff for a few years, because he first contacted me about 4 years ago and he was already analyzing and playing Zane's tuning. Hang in there Dan.
In regards to these special made pickups, I am interested in one too. I plan to have Don Fritshe to soon start building me another steel. This time, I plan to go the 12 string keyless route. However, I am still going to keep my BMI 14 stringer.

My new BMI S12 has a Power Boost pickup in it. Sounds so smooth, and has a 5-way strat style switch under the guitar which gives 5 totally different sounds from the pickup. I had a guy come up to me at a gig the other night and say that it sounded 'smooth and creamy' which I took as a compliment. Those pickups give a beautiful sound.

Damien,
I'm glad you like it. Your guitar has the same pickup "Cowboy" Eddie Long has. The new one is the Triple coil 5 way which is a clone of the old ZB pickup Zane used to build for the ZB's.
