I've played standard guitar and lap steel for years and years, and I've now acquired a Rains pedal steel. The guitar is great, but I have some questions about it and the accessories I got the previous owner to throw in.

1. You can get a hex wrench at any hardware store, right?

2. The volume pedal crackles and sounds scratchy. The previous owner mentioned "cleaning the pot." Is this something I can do myself?

3. Until I get a real "steel" amp, what are some good Eq levels to use on my Fender 410 Deville? (Edit: I've also got an Ibanez delay pedal if you have a recommendation there).

4. Anything else?

Wilbourne>>> Answer to question 1. YES
2. The pot will have to be replaced.

3. Turn the knobs until the sound is pleasing to you. Most players like a deep bass sound, with the mid sounds reduced and the treble set to their own taste. Turn the knobs until you get the best that amp cn offer.

4. Congratulations, now you have to work your A$$ off while sitting on it. Laughing

Make sure you get the right size hex wrench: three 16ths of an inch.

You might want to buy several of them and keep 2 or 3 of them in your paca-seat.That way if you lose one, you'll have another you can grab immediately.

I'd like to add to the above advice, you might try some electronic cleaner/lubricant, found at Radio Shaack. It simply sprays where the shaft goes into the pot, and leaches down into the pot, while you work the pedal back and forth. Sometimes the pot will clean up and get quiet for a while until you can order a new pot. I bought a new pot, and it was scratcchy from the factory, and I sprayed it and after a little bit, it got quiet and has been no trouble since. Just make sure you use the cleaner that has the lubricant in it.

If you end up needing a new pot, get a Dunlop from Tom Bradshaw. I put a couple in my volume pedals 3 or 4 months ago and am really happy. I had been using PEC pots and most of them went bad in a few months.

When you can, get a Hilton electronic volume pedal and some extra clips to go on the end of the pull rods on that particular guitar.

Billy, You mean there is still a guitar company using Jesus clips (as in Jesus, where did that thing fly off to?)

Wilbourn, I am a bit new at the PSG, was using an older ibanez volume pedal, I could never get the sound I was looking for, even thought I had a bad amp. I purchased a new Hilton VP and guess what, "Problem Solved"
