my firefox will not now let me open the browser. I am getting a message saying that the program is already open and that I need to shut Firefox down and then open it again. Task manager indicates under applications, that firefox is not running. Also, under processes I can detect nothing that I can relate to firefox.
I have uninstalled firefox from control panel and reloaded it (twice). Same result! Help!

It's a fluke fantom instance that should be visible under Processes in Task Manager. Close all the Firefox browsers and download windows, then set Task Manager > Processes to alphabetic display and you should see firefox.exe listed. Just End Process.
I don't know why this happens, perhaps a bad add-on??? Try disabling any recent add-ons, restart ff and try to close it. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Sorry Wiz,
I have no Firefox processes running that I can see. Certainly no Firefox.exe. As I said above, I have uninstalled the programme and reinstalled and am still getting the same result. I have had to go back to using windows explorer.
Are there any other Firefox processes that I should be looking for?
Any help would be appreciatied

When you uninstall Firefox (actually any program) restart Windows before reinstalling. If you just uninstall and then reinstall without restarting Windows you can still have the same problem. |

I'll give this one one more shot. I've tried the suggestions made above and am unable to resolve the problem.

These are some of the problems I found with the PC, and I was not clever enough to find , learn, and remember all these work arounds that everyone else seemed to know about, so I got so fed up with the PC I bought a MAC .
I have not had one problem with bugs, viruses things not working , hardware or software conflicts , it works and I can use it instead of spending half the time finding out how to work around problems.
A PC is like having an old car, you are forever fixing it.....but then some folks like to spend more time doing that than driving it. |

Apologies Jack, it wasn't meant to be a rant ,I was just saying I had this very same problem among many others and I wasnt knowledgable enough to fix them. My way out of this was to get a MAC. |

Pat;
When you have uninstalled Firefox did you also manually delete all of the files (* see note) and extensions in your logged in Mozilla Firefox Profile? You can get to it by using:
Start > Run > Copy/Paste: "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles" (with the " marks) > Press "Enter." You'll see a folder with a name made up of 8 random characters and the extension .default.
How about the "Program Files\Mozilla Firefox" directory? I recommend clearing out all of the old stuff, then cleaning the disk of temporary and unused files, then reboot, then download a fresh copy of the latest version of Firefox, and installing it.
* You will have to re-download all add-ons, extensions and plug-ins and your form data and history will be lost. Furthermore, unless you save your cookies, logins and bookmarks, to a folder for safe keeping, that data will be lost. To save those items, navigate to the profile folder listed above and copy or move these files to a safe location:
* bookmarks.html
* cookies.txt
* signons.txt _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Alan, that's one of my personal pet peeve's. Someone will have a problem - whatever the problem - and someone will post a response to use some different hardware (PC) software, etc. |
