Hey everyone,
Any suggestions for a pickup to put in a Morrell MLS? Looking for something Strat sized that would add a little vintage warmth over the stock Kent Armstrong ceramic pup and maybe get closer to a Supro sound. Looking for clean and slightly overdriven sounds. The MLS is in Open G if that matters.
Always liked P90's on Les Paul Jr.'s and the P90 type in the Gold Tone Oahu style model, a dog-eared one might fit over the pup cavity. Anyone tried that?
Appreciate any thoughts on this, I cannot find a store with anything more in stock than overwound Strat and Humbucking types... "You want it for a what?"
Thanks! |

Loni has pointed you into the right direction - absolutely try contacting Pete Biltoft from www.vintagevibeguitars.com - this guy is a genius, and his pickups are priced very moderately.
I have one of his 8-string lap steel pickups on a homebuilt lap steel, and that one sounds great (even better than a Jason Lollar pickup I have); I also have one of his Charlie-Christian-style pickups on a Thinline Tele, and that one sounds just HUGE, best Tele neck pickup ever.
For a P90-ish sound (one of my favorite tones for overdriven lap steel playing, too), you might try his Strat-sized P90s, or his blade-type single-coil, just ask him to recommend you something.

I would recommend checking out Pete Biltoft's pickups, too. I bought a couple of his dog ear P90s to replace the stock pickups on my Epiphone ES295. They sound great and have much less hum than the stock pickups.
Besides building quality pickups at a reasonable price, Pete is also a great guy to deal with. |

I went with the Strat-sized P90 (neck) and it certainly leaves anything in the price range way behind, and you're right, Pete is all about service with the sale. Thanks again! |
