I was doing some surfing earlier and found this interview with Buddy Emmons...
Q: Did you do a show with Tal Farlow awhile back? if so, any recordings of it, and what was that all about?
BE: Dave Burley (last name?) put a show together at the Longhorn Ranch in Dallas quite a while ago. The guitarists were Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis, Les Paul, and Bucky Pizzerelli. The rhythm section was drummer Louie Bellson and bassist Slam Stewart. It was recorded but I'm not sure if ever released. Steel players were Curley Chalker, Doug Jernigan, possibly Julian Tharpe, and myself.
I was wondering if a recording of this show could actually exist. As a huge fan of both steel guitar and jazz guitar, I can't imagine a better bill. Any info would be greatly appreciated. |

HI GEOFF,
I traded a few E-mail messages with Dave Burley about 1-1/2 yrs. ago, concerning those recordings, that were made about 31 years ago.(1976?)
I believe he said all the musicians gave permission to release the recordings, except one of the Jazz Guitar Players. Up until now he cannot legally release these recordings for sale to the public.

Here is another Dave Burley production that was released and is very difficult to find, with Julian Tharpe, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Bryant, Speedy West, Jimmy Day, Louis Bellson, etc:

Thanks for the replies, it's a shame this hasn't seen the light of day. I'd give my right pinky for a bootleg copy(it's the only appendage I don't use to play this contraption). Thanks again for the info. |
