Anyone familiar with these? Garnet amps were made in Winnipeg from the mid-late 60's to the late 80's, and were all hand-wired. The Session Man was 60 watts via 2x 6CA7 tubes. I tried out a 2x12 combo today, and it was great! HUGE clean tones, nice Fender-ish reverb, good EQ. Sounded really nice with my Gretsch through a Barber LTD, and AMAZING with my Sho~Bud. I would have thought that the 6CA7's would make for a honky, Marshall-ish tone, but it was actually much more in the Fender zone.
It's only $600. I might buy it! |

I played a Garnet a long time ago, on guitar. It was a very good amp. I'm not sure if it was this model, but I think it was a 2-12" configuraton. Lots of juice, sort of reminded me of a HiWatt - I had an original HW DR-103 for quite a while - why I sold it, I'll never know. Anyway, that Garnet wasn't for sale. Only one I've ever seen in-person.
6CA7 is the US equivalent of the European EL-34, but is a much tougher, higher-vacuum, and cleaner-sounding tube. The early Music Man amps like the HD-212/210 SixtyFive/One-Thirty amps used them, and they are plenty clean and chipper. |

If memory serves me right, Hal Rugg used a Garnet tube preamp thing in the studio back in the late '70s early '80s. I think he used it for that rocked out solo on 'Two Dollars in the Jukebox'.
One more area in which Hal was ahead of his time.... |
