Topic: best modern pedal steel |

hey guys. me and the buddys were having a discussion about the different brands of modern pedal steel (Carter, GFI, Rains etc.). Which brand of modern steels do u think takes the cake as far as reliability, customer service, quality, performance and tone?
(im well aware that TONE varies from ear to ear but its nice to hear input)

| There is no best. They are all equally good. That being said I won't play a modern guitar because none of them stand up to the vibe and tone of the older steels. |

| I don't understand with the Space Age technology we have today that an improved or equal sound cannot be made into modern production steel guitars of today. Are there better guitars out there, or we just nitpicking to say we know more than anyone else and like something old? You can't tell me that our modern engineers of today can't make a steel guitar that sounds as good or better than a 50 year old Fender or any other brand. Modern technology rules in the right hands. Antiques were made in the dark ages, but antiques can be mass produced by modern engineers. James |

| James, its all personal preference. There is nothing at all wrong with the modern guitars if thats what you like. Just because I like something different does not make me right. It only makes me right for me. All the modern guitars are well made. |

Unless you're the "best" player...
...you probably don't need the "best" steel guitar! 
In all seriousness, that's really a loaded question. Every player thinks he's got the best, and every builder thinks he's built the best. It would be hard, even with all our members, to find many players both objective and knowledgeable enough to make such a determination.
Even the cheapest guitar can make far more music than anyone who might happen to play it. (Yes, anyone!)

Personally I like MSA, but Kevin is right. Every guitar on the market today is well made. It's not possible to buy a bad one.

| Hey Chris, There is no Consumer Report magazine for Steels like there is for cars because it is too small of a field to have a group of objective testers go over each one and submit a detailed report. Many people who respond to the question are doing it on a subjective basis. Many people who respond also may be making money representing a certain product. You would really have to have a group of 20 people who are objective and who would have access to all the Steels on the market and then have them test them for a month or so and then give a detailed report...that will never happen because the market is too small...remember the car market is in the trillions. |

The real question is not what brand is best, but what color is best. Some people think it's black, but the TRUTH is that purple and green steels sound better than steels in other colors. (While comes in 3rd.)
Also, steels with the E to Eb knee lever on the left knee sound better than steels with the change on the right knee.

a little off topic, but "Mass Produced" is what's wrong with our Disposable society". I feel good knowing that the maker of some "antique" labored over the details, nuances of it, as I labor over the playing, feeling I put into the music.
Of course NOTHING can beat the throng of modern tech. Just my humble opinion.

A lot depends on what you want in a steel. I chose to get a Millennium primarily because of the light weight, but also because of the interchangeable pickups, and also out of personal loyalty to Reece.
For some, price is a consideration. Others love the look of a maple cabinet. Others want a particular sound characteristic of certain brands.
I believe that from a strictly mechanical point of view, MSA is the stat of the art. But as has been stated, everybody makes goos steels today. MSA may be the Rolls Royce, but there are a lot of Lexuses and BMWs and Caddies out there, not to mention Hondas and Toyotas.
The best way to pick a steel is to go to a show like the convention where they are all on display and try out different ones and see which one you like best.
Then make sure you order it in purple.

yes, thats true. But then i end up wanting to take them all home. . Ive played some of the best modern steels but the Carter is what won my heart with the smooth as butter action and heavenly warm tone. I think im in love

Chris, Carter makes some really outstanding guitars. You made an excellent choice.
