The Jazz show on Saturday was the convention highlight for me this year, the same as last year, although it was bigger and better than last year. I think most people that were there would agree, Dave Easley blew us all away. I have never heard such music from a steel guitar, and I've heard a lot of steel pickin'.
All of the players were excellent, and the backup band was phenomenal, especially Bob DeBoo on that upright bass, what a great player. Kyle Honeycutt on the drums kept everything tightly together, and Jim Stahlhut, the coordinator of the event, backed them all up with some great rhythm and breaks on guitar.
This show is worth the whole trip in my opinion. Jim got away before I could thank him personally, but I'll do it here publicly. Thanks to you and Barbara for all your hard work putting this together, it turned out really well. I'm already looking forward to next year. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

Ditto to Darvin's comments! It was so great to hear something fresh and to see some of the musical creativity of the steel players. |

I agree. Just got back from the Convention and very memorable experience. I really appreciate the hard work put in by Jim Stahlhut for organizing, plus all the players who contributed. This is a keeper for sure. What a diverse group of musicians, and for me, certainly new perspectives on the instrument to be gained. |

You're welcome Darvin. It was a great show and I want to first thank Scotty and his family for providing the room, stage, and amps. I was very proud to bring to the ISGC the Jazz Room this year. Jim Cohen, Buzz Evans, Doug Jernigan, Reece Anderson, Dave Easley, and Paul Franklin, with a lineup like that how can you go wrong???? BUT!!! A special thanks to each and everyone who showed up and listened. When we played the crowd didn't hardly talk just listened (like a true Jazz audience does). A big thanks to all of you. What do you supose next year will be like?????????

I have to add my thanks. I'm completely uninitiated in jazz, but I've been to Scotty's several times and I knew my father-in-law would enjoy the jazz room performances. I'd like to thank my friend Jim Cohen for reminding me about the jazz room schedule. I couldn't have enjoyed it more.
You guys did a wonderful job backing the steel guitarists. The band was into the music and it showed each time the solos were passed around. You guys did a great job.
You can't watch Dave Easley steop into his unorthodox "F-lever" cables with a straight face. At least I couldn't. Never seen anything like it... and don't expect I will again. _________________ HagFan

I've already talked to MSA about adding one of those knee strings to my new Studio Pro, maybe with it I can play some of that Jazz like Dave. LOL.
Seriously, I'm still blown away by this guys playing. That just shows to go ya, it ain't the equipment, it's the HANDS and the BRAINS. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

All the players in the jazz room sounded great as we would expect out of the usual suspects but when
Dave Easley took the stage, I overheard a very well known steel player stop in his tracks and say "Who is that?" It's obvious he has made an impression...thanks to whomever for making it possible for Mr. Easley to be at the convention this year. |

When I recorded my new CD "The Angle of Incidence" and Dave and I got to the studio I saw the string lever. I just made a joke out of it but then I heard him play with it......, I'll never say anything bad about string levers again, I promise. Dave was amazing on the CD and in the Jazz Room.
It was a lot of work getting this together but all the players and audience made it worth the time!!!

It really made the whole show. I just loved every player. Maybe next year you can arrange to do one a day! You have a whole year to get that together : )...Come to think about it there is a show in Phoenix, Dallas that would benifit from this type of show. Think of the practice you'd have getting it arranged at all of the shows. Wow, think about it!!! Thanks again Jim, it was a great time. |

I'd like to add my thanks to Jim Stahlhut and also his wife, Barbara, for organizing the Jazz Room again, and for inviting me to participate. The backup band was terrific to work with, and every player brought something outstanding and different. Special thanks to all the audience members who voted with their feet for the Jazz Room to become a permanent part of the ISGC! |

Great show once again! Jimmy had to work the main stage so he didn't get to hear much of it, but I enjoyed every minute of the show. It was awesome!

Dave Easley has already asked me if he could play next year. I said he could play any year he wants to. I guess I better start thinking about next year. Paul Franklin had some good ideas for next year too. I hope to keep bring the Jazz Room to the Convention for a long time!
