Hello all,
Just got a new P/P with a D to C# on the 9th string, something I don't have on my other P/P. Problem is that I can get the 2nd string to work fine by backing out the screw but I cant get the 9th to lower all the way no matter what I do. If I back out the 2nd string I can get the 9th to lower all the way but then the 2nd string goes way flatter than the C# it is supposed to be at with the knee lever all the way over. All you brilliant P\P guys out there that have worked on these before can probably tell me what is wrong.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Because the RKR cross shaft is so close to the changer, this doesn't give much room for 'rod flex'.
On my PP, the rods that lower the 4th and 8th strings are long enough to flex, as one finger will touch its stop before the other finger.
I just carry on pushing that knee lever until the finger with the longest throw touches its stop, and let the rod going to the other finger flex .
To get the same thing going on the 2nd and 9th string, I needed the 9th rod to flex, as the 9th string was at pitch before the 2nd string had got there.
I made a rod that went down the length of the guitar, and doubled back on itself.
This gave me the necessary flex to get the 2nd and 9th in tune.

It sounds to me like there is no spring on the 9th lowering rod. On that particular change, if you put about 1/4" long compression spring on the lowering rod of the 9th string between the collar and the bellcrank, it should allow for the change to occur easily- if not- send or bring it down to the shop (Steel Guitars of North County in Oceanside) or I'll stop by next time I'm on the way through to Cambria (every 6-8 months or so). |

As it turns out the rod on the 9h string just needed a little more travel.
