I have been facinated by the sound and/or technique on these two old country records. Anybody know who played steel on Gene Autrys 1930s record of "Sail along Silvery Moon" with split string slants steel solo, took me 55 years to find out how to do splits ;!!; and The Bailes Bros 1940s record of "Whiskey is the devil in liquid form", I always liked the sound of that old time steel . Hopefully someone may remember these tunes and know who played steel !!And maybe even know what make of steel was played !!

I believe "Whiskey is the Devil (in Liquid Form)" featured Shot Jackson on resonator guitar, based on this CD.
I haven't heard "Sail Along, Silvery Moon" so I can't say.

I believe Frankie Marvin Played both some resophonic as well as electric with the early Autry stuff. He also was a supporting actor in a lot of the movies. He had brother that also played the same "gliss" style that Frankie was was noted for. I maybe wrong but I believe his name was "Johnny".

Ed,
I'm glad you asked this question, I've always wondered who played the steel on the old Gene Autry songs, ( my favorite) 'Springtime in the Rockies', and some early Hank Snow songs, (my favorites), "With this Ring, I thee Wed", "Paving the Highway with Tears", "Within this Broken Heart of Mine", "Wasted Love", etc. etc.
I'm almost an "Old Geezzer.
" Thanks again for all the help over the years.
Jay
