One of my favorite film noir movies is Double indemnity with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck.

8 strings is the answer for me. 8 strings just offers so much more versatility. I've never looked back.

Norm Hamlet, on the early Merle Haggard material, his take on California Blues is well worth a listen.

Since they are played with a steel bar just like Hawaiian guitars and pedal steels I think you could call them steel guitars.
